What is this? Narration + witty lines was never the point.
Sorry, but this demo is simply horrible. Playing this I get the feeling that the developers have no idea of what made the original game such a incredible experience and though that a good narration and some meta/witty lines were all they needed...

I was more interested in the full game before playing this.

I didn't expect anything less of the people who dwell in the steam forums, not realizing that the demo was infact parodizing itself and modern demos. Shame on you, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

So it's a parody of a parody of a parody of a parody of a...until it loops all the way and becomes just like the thing it was supposed to be a parody of.

That's...very meta, I guess. But at the end of the day it's a demo that doesn't give you an idea of what the full game plays like. Why not make it a trailer, then?

Here's a little twist: The demo shows you excactly how the game plays by covering the mere basics, I would explain in more detail, but it's more fun if you figure it out yourself

Replys like this make me think that is was not that I "didn't get" the demo, but that a lot of other people "didn't get" the original mod...

I did "get" the meaning of the original mod: it is a game portraying the state of games in general; parodying how players have very little impact on the outcomes of the games they play, and how inconsequential their actual choices are. And that's something the mod does get across, for example, in the "Buttons & Choices" room: no matter what the player chooses, it's irrelevant to the actual game, and, in fact, if you choose different buttons, you'll get the same dialogue. Then there's the "cup game" and its achievement: this shows how meaningless achievements are, since nowadays most games reward players for the most basic tasks.
The game is supposed to be deep that's what's great about it.

You think that none of the demo has to do with the Stanley Parable.
It does.
It HAS explained what the game is about.
To truely figure out what exactly was explained, you have to listen closely to the Narrator's words and try to interpret some of the things he is telling you.

CakeBread is an insanely clever man, he would never make something mean nothing.

It seems a lot of people complaining about the game don't really understand what illusions and mind ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are.

Just play the first game if you are completely lost.

The ending of this Demo has exactly to do with the First one and I would assume the new one.

The elevator.

The long corridor.

It is all meaningful in some way.

The VERY end of the demo is the beginning of the full game
Yeah, and actually, the whole demo is a parody of demos in itself. Just look at the "famous demos" display: what do they all have in common? Even though they show how the game plays, they have nothing to do with its actual plot.

And yeah, that ending kind of terrified me. Not as in actually scared, but it gave me an unpleasant feeling.

i liked the demo but i gotta admit what you said isnt really the point of the original mod. you also saying you understand the original mod and go on to describe the demo.

in the original mod you can literally defy the narrator. it's a bit more complicated than that but essentially your choices have a great deal of impact on how the story plays out. you can even end up in someone else's story as the result of your actions. if you think about it from a game design perspective the game had multiple branching paths with several different endings.

it's fine if you want to say the demo parodies how little impact the player has on the story but that's not really what the mod demonstrated. sure the choices are intentionally limited in the original mod. you can argue all you want about that. however, you can make choices that completely change the story you experience. this is the opposite of what you have described.

i did like demo and i in fact suspect the main game will be more in the spirit of the mod so im not worried. i just thought id point out your error.
I kind of agree with you, abort_user. However, while reading about the original mod, I realized I didn't get all the endings (I think I got around four), so I'm re-downloading it in order to get them all, and then I'll be able to make a more informed comment. I did get some of the Narrator defying endings, and as I said, it doesn't have any impact, since, in the end, the Narrator is still in control of the situation. Stanley can't change that.

Umm, aren't you all forgetting that you never got to play the demo? There was no demo, so what are we even arguing about?
Yes we did, don't you remember when you put that cup in the can...
I've played the original mod and I think you need to shut up and realize that this is a pretty good demo. It's meant to be a game of it's own...

The demo is made to show nothing about the main game on porpuse
A demo made bad on purpose is still a bad demo. And it's a shot in the foot, since people that never played the original are trying this and just finding it pretencious and "2deep".

if you think about it as a new game and don't compare it with the original, the demo is excellent its mysterious and makes you feel ( despair and discovery but also ) like there's answers in the full game to help you make sense about what happened in the demo bringing out your curiosity.
Well, I was just reading TVTropes, and there it mentions that the demo might very well be a prequel, due to it's pretty linear nature and how the Narrator wishes for a game about choices. That makes the demo fit with the game while not fitting at the same time, don't you think?
The demo never ended, we can't judge it :O

TvTropes: The compedium of human knowlegde.
TV Tropes will find a way to defend anything and anyone. Including that guy.

Yes, that guy. You know the one. I'm not saying his name.
I hate Tv tropes. I hate the word trope. I hate this game. Take care everybody.
