Game Crashes on Loading - Fix - Windows 10/11
For the many of us who now own a windows machine with more than 8 cores, please be aware that the game will crash when loading if you have more than 8 cores enabled. It sounds a bit extreme but here's the solution to that problem in Windows 10/11

Start menu (windows key)
1. Type "msconfig" and enter the "System Configuration"
2. Click on the "Boot" tab
3. Click on "Advanced options..."
4. Check the "Number of processors"
5. Select a maximum of 8 processors
6. Click "Ok" button in "Advanced options..."
7. Click "Apply" button in "System configuration"
8. Click "Ok" button in "System configuration"
9. When prompted to restart, restart your computer

The computer will now boot up with a maximum of 8 cores enabled. This should allow you to play the game.

To undo these settings later
1. Type "msconfig" and enter the "System Configuration"
2. Click on the "Boot" tab
3. Click on "Advanced options..."
4. Un-Check the "Number of processors"
5. Click "Ok" button in "Advanced options..."
6. Click "Apply" button in "System configuration"
7. Click "Ok" button in "System configuration"
8. When prompted to restart, restart your computer

The computer will now boot up with whatever number of cores you have available.

Looks l like I'd have to go through bitlocker recovery to make this change, which is more of PITA than I'm willing to undergo to play this game again. Too bad :(
if you're still having this problem, I just fixed it by doing this:

1. open up local files
2. rename folder 'thestanleyparable' to 'stanley'
3. open up stanley.exe

Don't works here too and renaming does not fix it either. I will for sure not play around with system settings that deep for a game. That's too much windows 95 autoexec /config.sys tuning flair for 2024.
I can confirm this fixed my issue using my AMD 7950X3D & RTX 4080. Set the number of processors to 8, rebooted then loaded the game up. For me, the game would crash Once the end of the Loading progress bar was reached. With the processors set to 8 I noticed the loading screen did take 2-3 times longer but the game booted up just fine at that point and I had no issues playing. I was able to run the game at 4k with no compromise on any of the video settings.

Thanks for the excellent tip @Geo!
Just adding on my 2 cents here. This worked perfectly for me with my intel 13900k system. It seems anything more than 8 cores prevents the game from loading. I've had to set it to 8 cores, restart and now I'm able to play again

Bit annoying this was never fixed but once I'm done with these achievements I'll be done with this game
I fixed this by playing it under Linux rather than Windows. (Using forced compatibility Proton Hotfix, fwiw)
