how do you get out of the serious room

There actually is a way to enable sv_cheats. If you look around, I'm sure there's a guide somewhere.

The game will directly penalize you for using cheats. Partly because it's not the kind of game that's improved by cheating; getting around barriers and through walls and stuff defeats the purpose of the game to start with.

You leave the Serious Room by starting a new game.

I know it penalizes you for putting in sv_cheats, I've played this game.

I was saying that there exists a way to bypass this and activate them anyways.

What cheats do you want to do? There are other console commands you can use to change how the game works (some can cause crashes though)

I hate to be the dude to bump an empty thread and you can flame me for it, but all you need to do is to put the client.dll file from "The Stanley Parable Demo" into the normal game, replacing the default client.dll file. Make sure to make a copy of the original one because it might contain certain scripted event data and what not. Beware that outside of all the maps there are triggers that run the "quit" command. This will close your game and the triggers are in random spots.
