A thought about the downstairs ending [upstairs and downstairs ending spoilers]
I was so disappointed when I first did the insanity ending because when I saw that the down stairs went somewhere I expected there to be a second level of the building to explore, only to find myself in a loop with nothing to do but go through three rooms over and over. It was my least favorite ending since I kept forgetting it and going down there only to initiate that ending.
After replaying the game a few times (in search of that elusive unachievable achievement...which I still haven't gotten) I realized that this is the only ending where Stanley does things of his own accord and we get insight into what he's thinking and what kinda person he is.

He doesn't realize he's a game character. He thinks he has a home and a wife outside the building, and he really did spend all his time pushing buttons in his office. His existence and personality are what the narrator says in the beginning of the game.
In this ending Stanley closes his eyes without the narrator or player telling him to and he thinks/speaks. I'd have thought the dialogue was just the narrator trolling the player for almost going through the freedom ending and then going the opposite way instead, but the narrator can't control Stanley and Stanley does close his eyes when the narrator narrates him doing so, making me think what the narrator is saying is true. Those were Stanley's own words, even though the narrator was narrating them.

He doesn't do anything else in the game of his own accord except for in the freedom ending when he walks outside.

the narator says he closes his eye befor he actully does thus the narator is satill controlling him. narator says fly and stanly flys. this ending shows the narator taking the most control ouyt of any ending other then freedom.
the only thing stanly did that the narator did not say was the act of going down the stars befor and after every last move was said by the narrator befor being done.

I believe that the narrator cannot control Stanley's body at all, that he can only try to control Stanley's range of choices by altering the environment,
and in the downstairs ending Stanley closed his eyes and the narrator is a part of Stanley so he was able to narrate Stanley considering closing his eyes.
