This or 20 minutes till Dawn
Hi there,

I "accidentally" discovered Death must Die yesterday, and had a blast with the demo !

I knew Vampire Survivors was a thing of course, but never felt like digging this type of game before.

I'm now looking for a game to really discover the genre, and leaning toward 20 minutes till dawn or Halls of torments after watching some let's play.

Could you please give me some feedbacks on both of them ?

What I'm looking for :

1) a difficult experience
2) plenty of unlockable content that alter the gameplay : races, weapons, passives, etc (I don't care about achievements)

Hi,

TBH get both!
i had a blast with both games, although HoT hooked me more.

You have plenty to unlock in both games in terms of meta progression.
In HoT its a bit more.

Both games are diffcult at the start, but get significant easier with meta progression.

I dont want to spoil to much for you, since exploring in both games is very satisfieing.

Fazit:
get, both, you will have lots of fun.

Cheers!

20 Minutes til Dawn is far more complete. It has an HP system that's more arcadey with upgrades that also can function as emergency heals. You mix and match a character and a weapon, and you'll be rewarded for picking upgrades that compliment your build, but it's extremely free form so you can actually do really stupid (fun) builds if you wanted. I had a lot of fun with it, doing dumb builds for fun like max blast radius bazooka runs (you can take damage from it but the risk is part of the fun LOL)

As far as difficulty is concerned, I think every game in this genre falls off once you learn too much, but 20MTD was still sufficiently difficult and I didn't really experience as much of a difficulty drop as I did with this game. In the first 5-10 hours of Halls of Torment you'll enjoy a moderate amount of difficulty but as you unlock more stuff it becomes borderline AFK simulator.

This game is very EA imo. It might be good eventually but atm it feels the same way VS felt when it was new. There's potential for it to become better but it's still very raw.

Both games are quite similar but also quite different. Both are twin-stick survivior games. In 20mtd you need to survive only 20 minutes, while in HoT it is 30 minutes (like in Vampire Survivors). Each game have very unique style - actually HoT is maybe less unique, since it is kinda' based on old Diablo (at least it looks like D1 in a way), while 20mtd has its own visual image. HoT seems easier at start than 20mtd so maybe it is just easier to dive into the game, but I guess both games have similar level of difficulty in general.

I have both. I wouldnt resign from any. 20mtd seems more finished at the moment, while HoT is fairly new game, so it may change quite a bit within time.

I thought both games launched at nearly the same time, didn’t see that this one is still in EA 🤦‍♂️..

Thanks for the feedbacks, I will begin with 20 minutes till dawn then !

Halls of Torment is still in active development and we're supposedly getting an update/expansion sometime late this month [July] so there's that

both are good games especially for the price imho

This game still has a lot more to be added. Its hard at first, in that its not designed for you to actually beat a map right away. But once you do maybe 10 runs, the difficulty really drops off and you can beat every map and there's nothing harder to do. The only challenge at that point is completing all the quests, which basically just forces you to build certain ways to complete certain objectives, like 3 million damage with x skill, get hit x amount of times in one run, survive 28 minutes with no x traits, etc... it's pretty easy, just time consuming because once you get all the easier quests, you aim for very specific ones, trying to do a couple at a time, and you'll have like 50 quests to do at that point.

The steam refund policy is 2 hours.

You can literally try both and refund them or keep them...

HoT is much better IMO. 20m till dawn is always the same build, get more proj and win. Or play pet builds.

In the end I like this one a lot more.
The meta progression aspect has way more content which keeps me engaged.

I enjoyed my time on 20min till dawn but the game simply doesn’t offer enough different builds for my taste.

I bought both and thought I would enjoy 20 min more than HoT, but the opposite happened
