So, in this case, I do not believe they will gain the fire effect. They are children but the "Main Weapon" effect is not passed on. You can see this, for example, in the high voltage upgrade of kugelblitz. It gains no main weapon bonuses despite being part of kugelblitz (Rightly or wrongly this is how it works. Personally, i think it should gain main weapon effects, but it doesn't). The spirit orbs and needle should be the same, though you can't check in the status screen for these because they don't display anything (iirc).
What I can tell you though, is that they have identical modifiers to the Astromancer's Orbs and Phantom Needles abilities. The sole exception is that the spirit versions deal exclusively magic damage.
That's correct. If you take Ethereal Shift (Melee) the spirit needles with have -100% damage.
Spirit Warrior (main attack) - Melee + Magic
Spirit Needles - Projectile + Magic
Spirit Orbs - Projectile + Magic
Spirit Dash - Melee + Magic
Does anybody know if it needs to be main character damage or summons can trigger it too?
Any source of magic damage can trigger it as long as they have spark applied beforehand.
Did you used Elemental Surge of any kind by accident?
This will turn the Magic DMG from Summons into Elemental X,
which then cant trigger Thunder Crown anymore.
