what does the cracked eye do?

i found a red orb that sat on my xp bar like the herb-finder, so i followed it to a mob that popped up out of the ground and got a cracked eye or something when i killed it.

as far as i can tell, it just gave me a red orb with lava or something on it, that sat on my xp bar that didn't lead to anything.
