Please explain the appeal of this game
I played VS, Brotato, Boneraiser Minions, Holocure and a few other VS clones.
I want to believe the hype around this game, but I watched some footage and played a bit of this game, and it doesn't really seem that different from Vampire Survivors (plus some equipment?)

Is it the Diablo aesthetic? Is it because everyone is sick of Blizzard?
I never played Diablo (The only ARPG I played is Grim Dawn)

I also don't like Meta-progression that feels grindy, maybe that's why I don't find it as appealing as Brotato and Boneraiser Minions?

EDIT: Super grateful for all the civil and helpful responses!

for me first and foremost:
Ambiente, grafic/art design, sound, musik

It reminds me of my 56455434354534 hours in D2, back in the days when Blizzard cared about their customers.
The sounds when you kill something is soooooo satisfying, really hard to describe.
But if you slay hordes and hordes... delicious!

I love the meta progression of this game.
Besides from Blessings, a basic term in similar games, armor gives you a high variability in terms of builds, not to mention the differences between characters in playstyle.

The mechanics to gain your armor and other new stuff is something else and you acomplish this without insane amounts of grind.

The Achievements you unlock will increase your xp modifier and so the power of your char, a perfect flow into the meta progression.

Finally the different abilitys, currently not controllable what you get except starting over.
Every run can be complete different, but it never feels wasted.

I played VS, Brotato, 20MtD and SS myself.
This game has a good core formular and picks out the chocolate of those games.

But keep in mind this is EA, content is limited, but i am quite confident this will grow better.

I payed 5€ and have over 60 hours hard fun.
So this considered it was every penny worth.

Cheers!

the differences
sofar it doesnt get spammed with paid dlcs

you can active aim.

the characters are more unique, they have attacks only they can do themself.

the gear gives you alot of choices about how to play and you will feel the difference, from ratsummoning fragile shieldmaiden to fire swinging swordman that poops on the floor and makes everyone stick on floor

this has nothing todo with diablo beside old looks

the biggest difference to the game you played is that the maps are giant.

the grind is less as in boneraiser minions (i played this game alot)

so maybe read the contentsummary on the store page and either buy it or leave.

Thanks for the detailed response!

I love your post a lot, and am glad the game clicked so well with you.
It also made me see why so many people love this. Maybe people like me who grew up on later games would take some more time to warm up to it.

Maybe I'll wait for some more updates before I have another look at this game again.

Cheers to you too!

Another for me very important thing i totally forgott:

The game doesnt give you much information and doesnt take you by hand.
You have to figure out a lot by yourself.
Me, and "old sack" who grewed up with NES, without internet and guides, it was a very welcomed and high appreciated alternative.

Cheers!

its fun better then vampire survivors ,army of ruin or back to abbys . somehow more fun cuz its actualy chalenging and rewarding , grindy tho

Honestly I wish they'd make a proper ARPG with this look and feel. The VS sub-genre is getting old and they have the foundation for something much bigger.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s and can understand the nostalgic appeal people have mentioned from Diablo/Diablo II feel/ascetic and the frustration at seeing what that franchise has become. This isn't something you can retroactively tap into if you didn't have that experience. You can understand it to a certain degree, but it is going to hit differently for people. There are so many different games as well that people get into. People have the same thing for games like original Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Final Fantasy Series, Roguelikes etc. It is the same reason my little brother has nostalgia for Pokemon, but I don't quite have the same thing because I didn't spend as much time in that. I still enjoy it, but a look-alike game isn't going to do as much for me as for him. People will naturally be more forgiving and enjoy things that tap into game design and art styles they once enjoyed (and maybe still do). That said, as others have said as well, this game has made some smart decisions around characters/gear/skills and the run customization options that come with it. Meta-progression is a nice thing, too, but can feel grindy depending on how much you enjoy playing the game. The game is EA, is already good and has a lot of potential, and it could be amazing if opened up for workshop. I can already see the characters, gear, game scenarios, etc people could design.

Not everyone likes the same things

There is no reason for this - no explanation you're missing - it's just how things are

Not just video games or music or anything else - EVERYTHING IS LIKE THIS

Sooner to realize this - happier you will be in life

You do You...

Was about to comment the same.
Developers and publishers focus hard to have whatever they make "Be for everyone", which leads to many games being stale.

If something is for everyone, ultimately, it's for no one.

Honestly, I don't mind the aesthetic that much, and I know that DIablo 2 was hugely popular and influential. I may not have nostalgia for it, but I can understand why people would love a VS type homage to it.

Maybe my biggest peeve is with the quest system and meta-progression.

I know I'm not gonna like every popular game (Enter the Gungeon and Borderlands 2 are some well acclaimed games that are that I don't enjoy),
I just didn't want to dismiss Halls of Torment over limited first impressions.

I dunno, I'll probably revisit this after some updates/full release.

you dont have to like the game, if you played and didnt enjoy... it's fine, there's a bunch of other good games around, dont force yourself to like a game (i probably have 80% of VS-like games released haha, so i understand you, when we want to like something, but we cant)

this is the best VS-like game in my opinion, but that's just my taste, i like the art (yeah, the diablo thing was the first positive point for me), the effects, the music, the skills, the enemies, the items, the level up options, the npc, the equipment system, the classes (prob this is the only one that i like all classes), ofc it's not a perfect game, but it's pretty solid and so much more to come (currently it's a bit easy, but i think they'll improve that with more difficulties)

And about the meta progression a bit grindy, i guarantee you, this is not so grindy, at least not for me, i'm used to games with far more grind (also i love survival/crafting games, so... i'm more resistent and used to grind haha)

You don't have to be like thousands of ppl who think this game is excellent (me included), just have fun with whatever you like :heartyou:
(i was not sarcastic anywhere)

This! Thank you.
I've been saying this for a while, yet it seems very few people grasp it.

Combining Diablo with Vampire Survivors is the winning recipe here. Devs somehow managed to create something really special here by combining these two "genres". I really hope they continue to update the game and add more content for a long time for this.
