Even if you finish the run, you never come back, you die alone, abandoned in an empty maze.
You're just replaced by another member of your class.
And since it takes Grandpa more than 30 minutes to pull up the bucket & an object at the time is clearly the limit for his frail arms. He can't take more
This also explains why he doesn't give you the equipment for free - apart from the effort involved in lifting it, it's not your loot, the owner is dying in the maze right now.
Edit : Ho and if you wonder how you don't lose you'r actual stuff if you die at every run, well, it's magic.
Anyway, all of this rationalizing of the story is pointless, and doesn't in any way contradict the fact that taking the items "home" one at a time is pointlessly tedious.
But you often don't get enough gold from a run to buy a single item, so it doesn't make you do more runs. Gold is the limiting factor.
And yes, if u die, u lose not just 4 items that u are carrying but also 1 item that u have equiped that u already have in your stash.
