What is the purpose picking up that "purple crystal" after you defeating any Lord, beside ending the run?

It allows You to use the well and pick up anything You may have left behind.

The item drop from the boss - yes.
Just stating the reason for the mechanic of not ending the run the moment You kill the boss.
