because in the end, upgrading a perfect item gives you better bonuses than the same item that is non-perfect
so once you start getting your money rolling in , you might as well be upgrading perfect items instead
having said that, while this game benefits from maxing items (eg, only upgrading the perfect item or only using a best sword versus a weaker sword), you can certainly keep advancing even if you don't have perfect weapons or perfect group setup etc
socketed is also good but you won't necessarily be able to upgrade it or max it up as easily as a non-socketed item at the early stage. and again, a perfect socketed item is worth keeping over a non-perfect socketed item, so that's another argument for focusing on perfect items
after you get some money rolling in i would recommend for you to use the Alchemist building and make your items to be Eternal or "of Time". that will help you in the next time warp or dimension you go to, because then you'll have an item that you've already been upgrading and can start the beginning of that dimension or time warp with your upgraded items.
one more tip is that eventually you'll get more and more gems but since they are a hard resource to get at the beginning, you might consider when to use them versus not to use them. Another reason that making "eternal' or "of time" will be useful for a while so you don't have to keep making your preferred items in each dimension.
early game you will have plenty of room to mess around and also.. mess it up :)
later, having too many items in storage will actually slow down your game significantly.
you should aim to keep your total gear in pages well under 500 total
your game will start to show signs of lag when you egg count hits around 2000 pages but iv had as many as 40,000 pages of eggs and my farm was fine, other areas not so great. like opening some menus
to answer some of your question more specifically, keeping all eternals and 'of time' will actually cause you a big headache as you can only clear these from your storage manually.
consider keeping around 40 of each type, that is 40x eternal shield, 40 shields 'of time'
and for each slot including accessories since having them will save you a good deal of play time each instance you desire to keep hold of a certain affix for a later date
more than this is problematic, however. a few days into the game you really dont need to worry about it so much.
even trying to keep perfect socketed is going to be too expensive for you or unattainable altogether.
stick perfect in your loot filter and get rid of everything not enchanted, beyond that a timewarp or dimension jump will clear your storage for you
actually even auto selling non enchanted only a 'few days in' is way too early. your going to want some of those
ignore loot filters for some time yet. it will make itself apparent when you actually need to start using it.
just be aware, if you end up with 8000 'eternal and/or 'of time' you will have manually delete them
