Thanks for the diagram. I'm sure I'll run into problems down the line if this is one of the easier chords. Hopefully all this playing will trim down these sausages of mine. :)

If you think fat fingers are the problem :

Just have to learn how to work with the digits you have.

But, if you just want to get healthy.... great!

Well said. In my first week-two with RS i was thinking like "oh my, i have so small and short fingers with wider ends ;), how could i play guitar?", then i saw a few videos of little kids (9-10 years) playing normal large guitar very well and realized it is really only about drill and drill ... and drill again :) Our fingers just have to get used and everything would be possible.

Jimmi bless "muscle memory" :)

I forget which song it is (maybe Under the Cover of Darkness) but there's one that has you playing a full G chord on the 14th fret. It lets me get away with it but I know I can't really play that chord well.

It's very rare that people really have fingers too big to play guitar. But, you might not have a guitar with the right fretboard radius for you. Some fretboards are more narrow than others; I prefer narrower, but other folks prefer wider.

Or, as others have said, it's just an issue of learning to shape your fingers into different positions than you're used to. If that's the case, it just takes time and patience, and eventually it will become somewhat natural.

I have the guitar from this set that my parents got me years ago (http://www.amazon.com/Squier-Fender-Dreaming-Start-Playing/dp/B001R2I12Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1389925305&sr=8-2&keywords=fender+squier) ... I dunno how narrow the bridge is, but I have spent most of the day trying to get used to different positioning. I can play some chords better than others, but find myself having a hard time repositioning during transitions.

God I love the Strokes more than anyone has loved anything. EVER. I do wish that they had more Strokes songs though :P

I bet it's not so much fat fingers as how you are using your fingers. In general you need to arch your fingers over the strings and press straigh down using the tips of you fingers on the string so that they don't touch other strings. It will come with practice. Just focus on using the tips rather than the flatter part of your finger. It helps to keep your nails really short.
Yeah I cut my nails today and found that it helped a little because I would feel strings touching the very tips of my fingernails. Thanks for the tip!

I will try to both work with what I've got and get healthy. All apart of my becoming a better person thing I have going on.

I mastered Juicebox (rhythm) last night. That's a really fun song to play. I love it when I get to the point where I can play the signature (Peter Gunn like) riff without thinking about it. I feel like a real guitarist.
