Does the official cable work with other software?

I see online there are cables that do essentially the same thing as the official "real tone cable" sold by Rocksmith. These cables are not for Rocksmith, and instead, they're for recording your guitar on your PC (it gets treated like a mic I guess, so you can easily record in program like Audacity and GarageBand and what not).

I'm just wondering if the "real tone cable" also is recognized by your PC in a way that allows you to record? Like if I spend the money on the official cable, am I going to be able to also use it for recording? (If not, I'll probably get the unofficial one, since it seems you can just do a couple of work arounds or mod it and it works with Rocksmith just fine)

Get a chep audio-interface instead (f.e. Behringer UMC22). Might be the better solution in the long run ( and only costs about 40$)
