Buying DLC from the older game

I've seen a lot of odd, confusing, and conflicting information around the Steam Community, the Forums, and Reddit in regard to buying songs from the original game. Any info I've found on the topic is pretty old.

Will I be safe buying older songs/songpacks or do I need to purchase the first game beforehand?

If you bought the original Rocksmith then yea you should be good if not you have to buy the original rocksmith to play those old dlc songs I.E Dnt Fear the Reaper, Carry on Wayward

some work and some dont witch ones noone knows for sure wich ones
But if you get the 2012 version youll have know problems then with 10 more bucks the import tool youll get 50 of the songs that came with 2012 transfered to play in 2014 .It sucks but we all went thru it ;-) its 13 bucks USD on amazon

If you get RS2012 you can buy the DLC for RS 2012
you dont need the tool if you dont want the songs tranfered from the disk to 2014
You can always play those in 2012 if you want.and get the tool later

As I only own '14 on steam,, I simply can NOT purchase RS1's DLC, A requirement on Steam to buying any songs licenced to RS1 require owning RS1 on the account to purchase the DLC.

They should be forwards compatible (and are) but steam lists it as RS1 DLC too, and to prevent buying DLC for a game you don't own/can't use, they require ownership of the game before you can buy the DLC...


Steam/Ubisoft know about it acccording to forums, but I can't see it changing any time soon.

It's one more reason a user "Has" to buy the old product, if he wants access to the DLC...

No idea if it's the same on Live/Xbox, stopped buying songs there years ago.

I only can confirm sofar. I found no other way but buying Rocksmith and the Import-Tool for Rocksmith 2014.

I would stick to RS2014 dlc till a sale hits and you can grab the original game for under $5. Don't need the import tool unless there are songs from the original game not counting dlc that you want.

My best price finder says 9€ for a RS1 Steam Key[www.amazon.de]. Also, from what i have heard, if you buy in steam it only lets you buy DLC that work for you. I couldn't say as i own RS1 and all its DLC. And the disc import tool is recommended, lots of good songs for $10.

After a frustrating back-and-forth conversation with a poorly-informed Ubi support person I ended up biting the bullet and buying the older version for PC (I have it on PS3 as well, but cross-platform incompatibility meant buying it again in PC format) and I also bought the import tool. RS2014 is much better software than the original RS and I'm glad I converted the content, even though the cost was ultimatley ridiculous - I now own two versions of RS 2012, neither of which I ever play because RS 2014 is superior.

Be cautious with keys purchased from sites like the above posted, if it's a foreign gifted version it'll probably be region locked to protect regional pricing as soon as it hits your inventory.

Valve/Steam seem pretty keen to block games you are avoiding regional pricing on...

If you can be sure it's ROW/Region free? go for it...

The site above was Amazon (DE). And most games are not region locked or only region locked for Russia / Asia on Steam. But yeah, it's safer to check if it is a wordwide key first...
