What do I need to start playing?

An electric guitar? Heard of Rocksmith and grabbed this because it could get delisted again any day now. Haven't played since school

Yes a guitar, the separate to be bought Real tone cable or one that works too. Its mentioned another post I ha to look up. You can buy it at Ubisoft or better maybe Amazon.
That's the easy route.
If you want to go further you could think of getting an audio interface and uses ASIO. That does not work natively so you would need some mods.

I actually have some local pawn shops that sell guitars and stuff, might give it a try!

A DAW and a regular guitar cable would also work

While the store page says real tone cable required, the game was patched early on (at least 6 years ago) to allow input from your sound card, you just have to enable it in the menus.

So you just need a 6mm to 3.5mm cable or adapter for your regular guitar. Keep in mind that your results may vary with your sound card, but generally it works no problem here.
