That's the easy route.
If you want to go further you could think of getting an audio interface and uses ASIO. That does not work natively so you would need some mods.
While the store page says real tone cable required, the game was patched early on (at least 6 years ago) to allow input from your sound card, you just have to enable it in the menus.

So you just need a 6mm to 3.5mm cable or adapter for your regular guitar. Keep in mind that your results may vary with your sound card, but generally it works no problem here.
