i've played this on 7 64. but i've also played 2013 on 7 64, so maybe you have other issues.

Never had an issue on Win 7 64-bit.

Both flavours of RS work fine for me on Win 7 64-bit. Have you checked out the Rocksmith configuration file located: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Rocksmith2014, assuming you have Rocksmith installed in the default location. If not change C:\ to whatever drive RS is on.
There is also a RS configuration guide located in the steam forums.

The obvious question would be, did your system meet the minimum system requirements?
I only ask that because It failed to start.
Also doing a search on the RS forum should bring up questions asked already regarding "Failed to start" issues.
Do you still have the original RS installed on your computer? If so, steam would download any updates/patches that were provided to fix any early issue that occured.

How is that even possible? Once the code has been used you can't use it again...

good point although i purchased it off ebay and sold it on/. it's unlikely it would let me use it if someone lese has the number

But you can't have tried to install it then as the key would have been used.....
The game is and always has been compatible with w7 64

Probably a gliche in the install. No worries though. I got 2014 now and that works just fine.

They're both designed for Windows 7. 32-bit or 64-bit, it doesn't matter.

Your problem was/is your syste, not the game.
make sure your OS aand all drivers are up to date.

most likely true. This is not the first steam game i've had problems with but as rocksmith seems not to plagued by people with the same problems, it's probably a dodgy graphics, sound driver.
