Tbh if you want to move up from direct Realtone to PC setup, I'd heavily recommend a Line 6 POD Pro rack. The black newer version. You can get some used for like 350 bucks (close to what some of those full programs ask for) and boy that thing is a beast. I have its older version, the POD XT I recently bought and the guy loaded up profiles in it.

Has all the effects and stuff you'll ask for, no need for even a pedal board for the most part if you get its MK2 short/longboard with it.

You can connect it to headphones, active speakers or you can buy a power amp + cab. I'm in the process of specifically amplifying mine with PA's and then I be in delay heaven...

I don't use a Realtone Cable. I use a Line In through my Scarlett 2i2. If you're serious about getting into guitar, and using virtual amps, I highly recommend sinking the ~200 bucks into a 2i2.

As for virtual amps, I don't use any free ones, so I can't tell you. I use Guitar Rig and a bunch of Neural DSP plugins (any Archetype is a great start. Tim Henson's just came out, which looks and sounds fantastic)

As for free, I've had experience with AmpliTube (only the paid version, but there is a free version) and it was okay. No idea how the free version compares though.

If money is a concern, you could always sail the 7 seas, if you catch my drift.
