Check this post, it explains a lot in the first post. Also some people as always disagree, but best is to make up your own mind.

I am a user of both too, although I'm not a fan of a subscription model, i did wanted to try it, and can say i like them both. RS+ is still in a evolving system to grow better.
I can say it has better practices for beginners, and they keep being added, And a lot more songs. The search system could be made a bit better, because of the amount. Its just not many songs from 2014 version or of the sort most people tend to stick on, but thats due to licensing issues (which are partly a case of 2014 CDLC copyright infringements).

For me its a giving me a broader spectrum of songs to discover. Ones i would never have played before, cause i never knew them. But it does giv e me more options to play and learn. I hear of many people that got the plus version didnt go back to the older version though. And we share the thought that financially, the amount of official DLC that we bought each year is more or equal then the subscription model costs. But stop paying and you don't have access anymore, or some songs can even be removed if there is a licensing issue.
Keep in mind that the DLC songs for the current older versions have a license of about 10 years and get delisted from the store. Once bought you can keep playing them, but not buy them anymore. The 2012 version is already to its last songs to be delisted from the shops.

The songs that i miss out on, I play on RS2014, also because it has its (hacked) options for extra songs (CDLC) from the community. Also It stays yours to practice and can be used even offline. For official songs you need to buy extra official DLC songs. Take in mind of above said.
Because of its age it can give problems on newer systems, although they mostly can be resolved one way or another. You don't have those problems on the plus version, cause its server (online) based. The new version has already a feature to be able to use a phone as a mic to play, and it will be also rolled out as a full app on phone btw. This makes it more accessible, also for like acoustic guitars.

In a way i can recommend both. You might try a month or so with the newer version, and hopefully the 2014 version gets again in a sale discounted to buy as well. Keep in mind you need to buy a separate cable for 2014 to have the best experience (which also works on the newer version), or have a audio interface connected, but that needs some PC/software knowledge to get running on 2014 version since it was not natively build for them. The new version does.

first of all thank you for taking the time and to give me such an in depth answer to what it seems to be a divisive and always present question when it comes to RS. for that, take some points :humiliation:

sadly recommending both does not rly help me decide for one or the other. the only thing that it does, is giving me the impression that i have to at least try both out in order to be able to make a decision.

it's important for me to make the most cost efficient decision because as we all know money does not grow on trees and i rly don't want to fill the pockets of these ass1hats at ubisoft more then i absolutely have to.

maybe i just have to search the web. somebody might have calculated how much one and/or the other need you to spend in order to get the most out of them.

i think i will "lend me a copy" from a friend for the steam version and go for RS+ especially because you wrote it has more tools for beginners to practice which is my primary goal for now. "lending a copy" will solve the problem of songs getting removed from the dlc store, too.

i already spotted the cable for ~24€ on the web and will get that, too. i hope it will work without a problem.

did you have any technical issues with the cable or the software?

The huge problem that i have with a subscription model is that the can legally yank ANY piece of content whenever they want and you have lost it. At least with Rocksmith 2014, once you have bought a piece of DLC it is yours forever.

that's the problem with all streaming services and seeing how the political zeitgeist is evolving, the ever present possibility of censorship, hence the expression "you will own nothing and be happy".

don't forget that you do not own anything on steam, too. you bought a license to play/use a program. nothing more. valve views steam as a subscribtion service. if for whatever reason steam closes it's doors, all your games are gone.

ubisoft pulled dlc for ass1creed from steam just a few month earlier. paying customers were not able to access the content they bought legally. that is why i have my reservations against ubisoft and don't want to support them more then i have to.

after doing some research i can't get a free copy without viruses so i will go for the standard version here on steam for 30€.

That price on the cable is a good one. I bought myself an extra one in the end of year sale, although the older one also still works without a hitch. But then i have a spare for travelling. It should work instantly, aside of other programs that could be interfering. The older Rocksmith wants exclusivity of the sound settings, and other programs want the same. Nothing that can be solved as of yet, but it can be sometimes tedious searching for the culprit. I have tried it on different systems, and even Windows 11 it worked right out of the box for me. But next to that i keep an older pc as a backup aswell.
Like said, for the problems that would occur, are more likely to come from Windows updates or other programs newer updates in game and sound features and newer hardware.
Just last night i had the older version crashing twice before it worked well again, and that was just after an Windows update, or Steam having a change aswell.

Also i do use some mods from the community that make the program a bit better to use (quality of life 😉) and adds some extras that should have been in it.... With those i am able also to switch between the cable and an audio interface on my different setups. (Those being RSmods and RS_Asio)

The fact i would recommend both is just of having best of both worlds, like to be more independable. To play even when there's no internet for instance. There's also an active community (many of the same for cdlc) for Rocksmith+, for adding charts and playability for the songs that are available. (Workshop)

Both programs cannot really rule out a personal teacher, since it cannot see if you are using a different way or wrong posture, that could create problems later on. For that you might also check other courses that focus more on that. But practice wise Rocksmith+ adds most together in one single program which is still evolving. Since we can't look into the future, we have to see how it gets. You might say the older version is a backup version aswell. Given your system can still run it in a few years.
Like i have been using Google Stadia with great pleasure and benefits, but they still pulled the plug on that one.

i just went with the steam version for now and see how much practice i can get out of it. my initial plan (that i want to go back to asap) is working with standard notation through guitar pro 8 while using my ears and https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ for learning new songs.

RS for me is a "fun" tool to just have even more playtime with my instrument. in the very beginning i decided that i don't want to be a "tab" player and as for now i can't spot "normal" notations in RS. i will transcribe the songs i like most. my trusty keyboard will help me with music theory in general while doing so.

if RS on steam proves to be worth my while, i will give RS+ a go for a short time before i invest in more tracks as dlc.

as for stadia, i am happy for you that it served you well but it does not change a single thing i wrote to cpt. carrot. the same goes for any game-pass no matter the company providing it.

i am prepared to lose my internet or access to any gaming platform i am on. they question is: are you guys too?

Are there no more offers on Rocksmith / Steam song packs?
Sm0k3f47h3r Apr 22, 2023 @ 10:19am
as far as i could see you can buy song packs from a band or an artist which mostly consists of three songs. maybe there more offers on steam sale.

if you mean sales, then i can say there has been no sales lately on the dlc songs and packs, but perhaps in the coming summer sale. But songs that are to be delisted shortly, they havent been into sales anymore.

Pro-tip: Check out ToneLib Jam. It's sort of like a "GP8 Lite", but not only can you read notation and tab, but it also has a Rocksmith-like 3D display, and it can load Rocksmith's .psarc format (including the music). I've been bouncing between that and Rocksmith and it's been pretty awesome.

thank you for the recommendation. it's basically a steal: 53€ :D

i got myself GP8 for 60€ awhile ago. tonelab seems to do the exact same thing with the added functionality that it is compatible with RS and you can use a similar "playing mode"

I would recommend ToneLib Jam as well. It has a free demo, support for win mac linux, goes on sale regularly. It can detect and tempo map songs pretty accurately so you can sync a guitar pro tab in a matter of two minutes without rewriting all the tab.

And of course no subscription scheme.

It's also on par with Guitar Rig for amp simulation and effects. Sounds are great and you can use it as a VST.

today i realized that i would just throw away money by buying into this ubisoft scam and go into the tab direction which i didn't want to do. all RS songs can be learned for free. sometimes i am a special kind of re1tard.

so you would recommend ToneLib too because i can visualize songs by using the guitar pros .gp5 files? sounds good. anything else i might be used it for? anything i can't do with GP 8?

i am using a modeling amp at home. the katana mkII 50. it comes with it's own software so the next step would be a footswitch.

what is guitar rig and what does VST stand for?
