Good for beginners/learn to play guitar?
Just bought an electric guitar and amp last week for my birthday and saw this is on sale. Was hoping it would be a good tool to teach me how to play guitar. Any one can confirm from experience if its viable?

I would imagine, just need something to get someone like me who has absolutely no background in music to have some sort of footing.

I'm doing a mix of JustinGuitar lessons for more theory and rocksmith for fun technique training and as a motivational tool. It's pretty fun, but you need to buy a Real Tone cable not included ofc in steam version.

Is theory necessary to learn? My goal right now is to play songs I like closest to their original form and get better at finger dexterity.

Theory not necessary. Played a many cover band and did not theory for that. Just try to play the instrument everyday, even for just 15 minutes. RS great for building finger dexterity.

It is not if you are planning to keep playing only in game but I feel like practicing outside the game helps with overall playing quality. Also it gives me opportunities to just pick up a guitar for 5 minutes and train without plugging it in as these lessons don't need you to use amp. I'd recommend JustinGuitar if you want to pick up some nice tips and pointers. He also gives full description of what your 20 minutes practice session should look like, and all that's for free!

Funny enough, I been using him to learn how to play Through Glass, Heart Shaped Box, and some other songs earlier this week haha

So you can see he's a very nice teacher. I'm working through his beginner lessons and it's pretty fun, not too hard but still challenging enough to learn.

He definitely is a good one. I also just picked up Rocksmith and as someone who grew up with Guitar Hero, I like it as a nice way to improve finger dexterity and just have some background vocals to go with heh. I think it's a good purchase.

I used Justin Guitar too. He has an awesome website where all of his beginner lessons are free. He's not at all condescending or a show-off. He knows you're a beginner and knows the challenges you face. Justin isn't concerned you don't know music theory. As I have progressed I admit I want to learn more of it. It is super important to know the notes on the guitar neck especially the 6th (E) and 5th (A) string. You'll find that knowledge real handy when you start playing power chords. I would use and learn from Justin then apply that to Rocksmith. Another win is Four Chords Karoke for practicing strumming patterns. (Just realized that Four Chords is no longer offered on Steam).

I have played 2700 hours so far and still going. I would suggest that you find one or just a few songs that you really like and stick to those before trying to play everything. Unlike an instructor this program will look for perfection so don't give up. You will get better than the program seems to say. No one person can know it all. But you can get better than some people that I know who play in bands. Tabs and youtube can not tell you when you miss a note or chord. This program will catch a lot of mistakes but not all. It is like following a car to a new location. You get there but you may need to do it a few times to remember.
