I like the VR experience because the environment felt more immersive, being able to look around, etc. However, the control scheme is DEFINITELY not VR-centric. Interacting with the world is done with two buttons: one toggles between look and use, and the other button activates look/use.
I'm sorry if this review sounds a little disjointed, I have just stayed up WAY too late playing the PC version with WASD movement and right/left click interactions. If the VR version hadn't made me sick, I would have happily kept playing that one. I hope this helps you make a decision :)
Based on what I read it will be a free upgrade to the base Steam version. Meta/Oculus has a VR version of this on their website right now. It's the same game as the original one here.
I wouldn't say that the two versions are "the same" -- the VR experience is dramatically different. Personally, I love the VR version but bounce back and forth between PC and VR. For long play sessions the VR gets to me and I get nauseas.
FYI - We completely re-engineered the inventory system, and added a lot of "quality of life" enhancements since the initial release of the Quest 2 version. PC VR headset users will be very happy! The game was awesome as was, but is even better now.
Thanks for the update Ken! I will be saving this for my PSVR2 then. :)
So, if I summarize:
- There's already a standalone Quest version in the Meta store
- There's also this PC/Steam version
- There's a VR DLC/add-on/version coming here on Steam, which will be free for owners of the PC/Steam game.
The upcoming PCVR Steam version will have better graphics compared to the standalone Quest version I suppose?
Colossal Cave - $24.99
(Includes PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck (Linux)/Steam VR (coming imminently)
Steam Deck (Linux) Only - $19.99
Steam VR Only - $19.99
If someone already purchased the game, they will get the SteamVR version and already have access to the Steam Deck version.
The desktop (or should I say flat-screen, or PC, or non-VR) version of the game is quite different than the VR version. The game is the same, but the implementation is VERY different. The VR version has a lot of enhancements in addition to being in VR.
Plenty Windows-only VR games work via Proton (a few don't), and there are some Linux-native ones. Half-Life: Alyx, for one.
