NPC chatter English subtitles mod
I was wondering if someone in these forums tries to work on a mod to bring English subtitles for the world conversations if the language is Japanese ...I can see that the developers never fixed that oversight and I will be glad if a mod is being worked on ...I know that playing the game in English is not a deal breaker but I would prefer more authenticity

Unfortunately it's just tough to implement if you don't already have full closed caption (Actions, incidental dialogue etc.) level subtitling in the game, but hopefully something can be figured out. Though I can tell you from what I do understand of the japanese dialogue that a bunch of the small unsubbed stuff is more or less people greeting/thanking/talking about how much you've done as Jin and talking about the mongols being brutal, about what you'd expect.

So...would you recommand me to play in Japanese ? As long as the small talk from the npc's is very trivial

The japanese VA is very good yeah, you might miss out on the small-small dialogues, but anything of any real importance will still get subs, so definitely try it out.

Well....I guess that the small details are usually found on 2nd playthroughs so...if the game will hook me up , i will play it a second time in English . Thanks !

lol it's a cinema term, it's like 'masterful' or 'high class'

I use my own translation app. I have set a hotkey on my gamepad to start/end recording. Clips are automatically transcribed and translated

The technology for real-time translation doesn't exist yet. Unless you count extremely poor quality translation like google

Still, I am able to get the NPC dialogue translated perfectly, but I don't know about modding that into a game. It wouldn't be worth the effort for me

My app automatically logs everything though, so I could potentially make a screenshot for each dialogue. That way I could post the translations and audio along with the screenshots somewhere maybe

Sounds cool

I highly recommend Japanese with dub, it's so much better.
same with the yakuza franchise.
waaaay more authentic, though you have to be fairly quick at reading subs as english is a slower language than japanese and thus sentences are completed 2x as quick as English.

I've noticed in Japanese that entire sentences in English can be spelled with very few / handful "sounds" in Japanese so you are right ....I should read the subtitles quick

There is a discord with Ghost of Tsushima mod authors. Would you care to join ? I think you would be of great help there. There are people working on the sub title mod in there.

Personally found playing in Japanese voice dialog extremely satisfying. The voice actors are so good, and clearly highly experienced.

That Jin is voiced by the actor who has played Zoro from One Piece is such a great treat. The man has been voicing one of the greatest swordsmen in Japanese anime for over 20 years! He does sound older than he looks in the game, but he really understands, on such a raw and fundamental level, the tonal inflections that this character needs as an honorable samurai who's struggling and growing in the times he finds himself in.

For me the only two bothers are (1) the loss of some of the world dialog, which i think just helps with the feeling that you've been affecting the world and that it is a sort of living world, and (2) the fact that the english subtitles are clearly lifted from the english dialog. I don't know a lot of japanese, but I do know enough to tell when the phrases are totally off - personally i find the japanese choice of phrasing and expressions more powerful and impactful.

For example, somewhere early on in the intro, Jin and Yuna have to enter a house, and Jin questions this action while thinking of the owners - Yuna exclaims in Japanese (something to the effect of) " ... they're already dead!", but the English subtitles are " ... they aren't coming back" - to me, the English subtitles made it feel like they've gone on holiday - the gravitas was lacking.

There are lots of little pieces like this where the English expression felt weaker than the Japanese expression - though some of my friends who are more learned in Japanese culture and language also shared that this is because some contextual things are just harder to translate directly.
