But.. big BUT... there's no subtitles for chatter in the open world. Jin makes a random comment? Probably not subtitled. Jin talks to his horse? Not subtitled. NPC chatter while walking around? Hopefully they don't say anything world building, cuz no subtitles.
That's my only complaint about the entire game so far. I'm loving Lethal mode, the mechanics are wonderful, and its all so beautiful. But damn me I don't speak Japanese.
That is my only gripe with the japanese V/O /w English subtitles. The lack of subtitles for NPCs talking to each other is a glaring issue.
Oh! I´ve only played for an hour so far to the point where the open world adventure really starts. You´re right, if you don´t get the little linguistic details around you that´s a little minus. But since the rest seems to be so well done I will forgive this as the advantages of the Japanese voiceover outweigh this flaw for me. But damn I wish I could speak Japanese as well.
I switched to English to walk around and see which I prefer. I spent the first 8 hours of the game in Japanese. I'm proud to say that my anime-weeb-level understanding correctly translated a couple of JinxHorse comments and a few words in some of the NPC chatter.
I'm both embarrassed and ashamed that I know just enough but not truly enough. I'm one of ... THOSE ..
Since I have zero weeb experience I think I´ll let my imagination go like the wind in this game. Let´s see where it´ll bring me ...
I see this seems to be the perception of many, but I´m glad I´ve chosen this route anyway.
Good luck, at least we all may have a different situational "understanding" of what happens around us. Leaves room for interpretation :)
Like I said, I went 8 hours and was fine. It just became more and more obvious after I gave English a go. It's nice to hear and understand things, but IMO.. English Jin sounds like a ninja or monk while Japanese Jin sounds like a samurai
Edit: Also, it threw me for a LOOP in the intro when the Khan says "I learned your language" in English. That was when I restarted with Japanese to begin with.
I guess I´ll do the same as you did and switch the game to English at some point. But I´m sure I want my samurai back after a short comparison.
Exactly my thought its amazing in japanese, i went to YT to take a glimpse on english and it sounds alot worse, its also pulling me out of the game when everyone is speaking english i really like the japanese dubs.

Edit: ugh, that speech in Japanese. Just... SO much better.
