I always want to pet them after they help me find the treasure, but sometimes they just run away.

No need to be salty
There is a line of domesticated foxes. They are pets. They came from a genetic study done on the genetic triggers of domestication. They were studying the genetic changes of foxes as they domesticated them over many generations. They are expensive to get, but they do exist.
