NEW GAME WON'T START [[FIXED]]
If you're playing for the first time and you try starting a new game, nothing happens. You select Yes and you stay on the menu screen.

TO FIX:
You have to close out the game --> open windows defender --> click "virus and threat protection" --> under virus and threat protection settings, click "Manage Settings" --> scroll down to Controlled Folder Access --> click "Manage Controlled Folder Access" --> click "Allow an app through Controlled Folder Access" --> click "Add An Allowed App" --> you can ether click "Browse all Apps", or "Recently Blocked Apps" ("recently blocked" is easier) --> select "Ghost of Tsushima" and confirm it.

YOU CAN NOW PLAY THE GAME! While I'm here, I just want to say that I hate Windows. This shouldn't be blocked by your PC, since you already made the decision to play the game. I spent 4 hours figuring this out and would still be searching for answers if I didn't come across a reply in another thread. Microsoft is the worst.

I wonder why this happens to people. I also use Windows and never have had this issue.

Do you people not update your Windows? Like, Windows update includes Windows Defender Definition Updates. Typically updating to make sure to exclude stuff that may be incorrectly targeted.

Update your stuff.
It has nothing to do with Windows Updates. My Windows version was the latest when this happened. This happens to random games of mine and I have to go out of my way allow it through. Controlled Folder Access is the most annoying safety feature I’ve come across on Windows. It picks and chooses what to allow through randomly it seems. Some games don’t even open if you don’t allow them through. Yours is probably off and that’s why nothing has tripped it.

Well done...this should be pinned to the store page :p

I had this same problem and the root cause for me was related to the PlayStation PC SDK (PsPcSdk). Uninstalling that allowed me to run the campaign. Haven't tried to play multiplayer yet but my guess is it'll fail without the PlayStation Play SDK.

The PSPSDK was in this folder (mine is gone now so I don't have the exact path). You'll see that folder disappear after uninstall below.
C:\ProgramData\Sony Entertainment\...........

To uninstall the SDK, browse to the game folder here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR'S CUT
You'll see two files: PsPcSdkRuntimeInstaller.msi and PsPcSdkRuntimeManager.msi. Right click each and select "Uninstall".

Next time I ran the game I got an error complaining about the missing SDK but then the game launched and I could play campaign.

THIS worked, the other 30985720987450293875 suggestions did not.
