there is no coop for the singleplayer campaign, coop is a seperate multiplayer mode with no real open world but a bunch of missions instead with a different story and mythic elements and of course unlike the singleplayer campaign you have to pick a class that defines your available weapons and abilities

for the gameplay modes at legends, you can freely open a session and other players can join you
except for raids and trials, where you need to matchmaking before the session and if someone drops out you wont be able to matchmake during that session, only inv or re inv
After completing the story 8 or 9 times (I lost count) and got all the achievements for the story mode, I finally moved onto the Legend (online coop) mode. Trying to get 100% achievements. It took me a long while to level up to a stage where I am confident to "help" others and play my part. If you are going into Legend mode, you will need to do some farming and it is the best way to learn the "path" so to speak. However, you do get better gears and higher reward by playing coop. Discord has one of the largest G.O.T. legend family. However, due to old age, it is too overwhelming for me. So, I solo most of the time when I find that I have to level up certain gears. And when I don't have any gear to level up, I just choose the matchmaking mode, i.e. the system will pair me up with someone with similar level. Depending on your ability, each game is on average between 20 to 30 mins. Will be shorter if your playing partner is experienced and helpful. I do come across some good players who kills 95% and leaving me almost nothing to do, let alone levelling up my gears. But all in all, that is about 1 in 10 encounter. Most players are very helpful.
There are a lot of Youtube videos on builds which will give a lot of info on how to build your own character. You have 4 classes of characters to choose from. Oh, you can only choose one class before each session. Samurai, Hunter, Ronin and Assassin. While each has its specialties, each can be built into a God like character, well, and one's skills as well. I tend to stay behind. Don't like rushing in. Anyway, I hope this will help you. The Legend mode is surprisingly better than I thought. I can go as far saying that, the story mode is literally a training ground for the Legend mode. Hope to see you there... good luck and have fun :)
