Of course you have to take that into consideration, but that would mean that they can also hear how it's pronounced, hence are able to listen to it, and so can check out for themselves how it's pronounced. But that requires work not many are willing to do.

True. And there is also word of mouth to consider as well, where the incorrect pronunciation is spread faster before anyone can notice.
Not everyone will hear the difference between「つしま」and「つうしいま」
You've been bamboozled if someone told you that a Japanese dev of the game pronounced it like that. The T isn't silent.
So.. TSU-shima. HIRO-shima, etc.
