Pre-load vs Download Day 1
Hi all,

I wanna get your thoughts on Pre-loading the game vs downloading on day 1. I have already pre-ordered the game. However considering how the last game took so long to unpack after pre-loading it a day sooner, I feel it is better off downloading day 1. From what I read, with pre-loading, Steam has to decrypt all the pre-loaded files and that takes long depending on CPU and SSD. Right?
So help me decide between the two.
Thanks in advance!

from what I see on Steam, the game will be unlocked on May 15. and the game itself is probably 16/05, it's hard to say

I never preload, downloading is always faster

No midnight release??

i think i will preload, although the download speed is way faster for me during mornings there is no guarantee that it will be that and downloading 75gb takes a long time in sub 10mb/s speeds (it's usually that but sometimes my 5g connection kicks in and the download speed goes to 30mb/s). i am going to trust that decrypting the game files takes about an hour or so on my SSD which is enough time for me to do some groceries for the weekend.

i mean couldnt you preload it and if it takes "too long to unpack" just uninstall and reinstall? you were gonna install it day 1 regardless

I always preload. This game will take me a couple of hours to download but, I've never experienced more than 10 mins to unpack a game. Most recent was Horizon Forbidden West. That took about 5 hours to download and 10 mins to unpack. So weigh your internet speed vs. CPU/SSD speed and pick whichever is faster.

Unpacking usually is much faster than downloading, yes. Esp. you are not the one in the home LAN.

It took me 22 minutes to unpack HFW which was around 100 GB on a Ryzen 5800X and that includes downloading the Day One patch. I would guess it would take less than 15 minutes to unpack GoT on a 12700K which is roughly equivalent to a 5800X

If you have a weak to weaker side of mid-range CPU, and also lack a more modern SSD, absolutely download it unless your internet speed is rather slow otherwise the unpacking process could potentially take hours for some of you.

Also note that unpacking a pre-load takes double the space available to fully unpack or you may... end up regretting having to delete stuff.

Some have mentioned that odds are if you are playing this game then CPU is probably fine for unpacking because the CPU requirements aren't low, but the requirements are actually extremely low with minimum CPU being a Ryzen 3 1200 which is a joke compared to the typical modern gaming CPU. It can keep afloat, but this will absolutely not have a desirable unpacking time.
