If you have a phobia towards looting, NO. You don't need to grab it at all. You can finish the game with your starter set of gear.
However...
If you would like to improve the damage output of your blade & bow, you will need to grab some loot because that's the currency you pay to unlock the next powerlevel. Same thing applies to your armor, you can improve your armor with each level.
There's crafting and you need to get stuff to make upgrades.
It is what it is.

unlock skins, saddles , couple more things, then YES u gotta have to loot nd grab nd collect things as much as u can, wats the point of open world exploration in this, when u just stick to limited gameplay when u can just go nd explore the whole island, full of secret caves n things nd beautiful places n locations in this plus also with that u get to discover more about stories about other characters n back story about character's father n all..
looting is a must in it, but if u don't like it then play with same armor n sword but at some point u have to unlock certain abilities n while clearing out some enemy bases, BONUS stuff u won't get it coz some bonuses required certain nades, throwable, some abilities which u have to unlock with looting resoures nd upgrading ur bow n arrows, sword n all that..

Am I missing something? 60 hours into Days Gone and that's a game where you don't have to loot anything to progress. You can only loot dumb crafting materials from corpses and the few boxes that give you (optional) upgrades are so far and few that you can easily ignore it. What is your definition of looting in games?
PS: Yes, this game is the same. You can optionally explore to get some optional upgrades or collectibles but you can easily skip that if you want to be a badbehind. This whole thread is a big question mark in general.
Have you played far cry 3 ? In that game yo dont really need to loot anything ever. And if you wanna upgrade something, you 100% know where to go and get it very fast,No distraction
In most modern games the game expects the player to loot every single dead enemy , loot every single box/treasure chest/jar etc , and "lootable objects" and "resources" are placed in such way to make you constantly spot them and run from one to another endlessly
If a game makes u loot enemies and boxes constantly to make adequate "progress" then its pretty much a game i hate
This game isn't that heavy on looting. There aren't any looter-shooter, Diablo / Destiny systems at play. That having been said, there is a crafting system for upgrades. Ironically, it is indeed VERY similar to Far Cry 3 and other standard Ubisoft Far Cry / Assassin's Creed systems.
Basically, you'll find:
- linen and leather around civilian settlements. These are used to upgrade armor. You also get these as quest rewards.
- iron and steel around Mongol camps. These are used to upgrade your sword and dagger. You also get these as rewards for liberating settlements / outposts.
- Bamboo and yew wood just growing places in the wild. These are used to upgrade your two bows. You can also find these around settlements and camps on occasion, as little wood bundles.
- Predator Hides, which come from killing boars and bears. These are used to upgrade your ammo pouches.
- Supplies, which are the currency for buying ammo / paying for upgrades. You find these all over the place. Enemies drop them. Sacks contain them. Etc. If you wear the Charm of Inari, you can get double the supplies from most sources. Makes gathering them incredibly easy to do.
- Flowers, which you find growing in the wild. These are used to buy alternative color schemes for armor. Purely cosmetic.
In practice, you don't really need to worry about these if you don't want to. If you get good enough at the combat, you don't need any upgrades. They just make things easier.
Also, the game is very courteous and has an over-abundance of crafting materials. If you loot every container and node you find, you can fully upgrade two armors, both bows, most of your ammo pouches, your dagger, and get your sword to quality rank 5 of 7 before even leaving the first zone. Bear in mind that the game has two more base-game zones and a DLC zone to go after that.
So if you only want to loot sporadically, you'll be fine. If you want to treat the system the same way you did the upgrade systems in Far Cry 3, AC: Black Flag, or AC: Origins... you'll be more than fine, because it's pretty much exactly one of those (which I was very happy with, being a Ubisoft veteran myself :-P )
Edit addition: Oh, and the higher-tier upgrades need rare materials... but it's not a grind to get them.
- The last upgrade tier of armors needs silk, which you get from side-quests related to named NPCs. No farming required.
- The last upgrade tiers of the bows need wax wood. You get one for completing a shrine and every shrine has a second wax wood hidden along its path. Super fast to gather enough to upgrade bows when you decide to do so.
- Your melee weapons need gold, which you get from taking out the biggest outposts. Super easy and not a grind at all.
You can buy all of the above in small amounts from vendors, too. It's not a bother and, again, you can just ignore the system and be fine so long as you get good at the combat / stealth.
1 mission to pluck some Lavender so you can craft medication. You're not going to like this Samurai game if you're not into simple sidequests .
This has the exact same looting/crafting mechanics as Days Gone, so you marking the guys answer as correct while he claims it's not loot heavy is pretty ironic.
Like I said, you're the one who keeps making it confusing. This has the exact same loot/craft mechanic has Days Gone, which you don't like. Make up your mind or go play Lego Adventures or something, pretty sure there is no loot in there.
EDIT: Not the same btw, this game is far worse than Days Gone because in this game you need all the loot to upgrade your armor, bow and other weapons. So lootfest compared to Days Gone.
