Merchants: Vanity gear only?
Since I don't care about vanity gear and merchants don't seem to sell anything else are they worthless to me then in the base game? Am I missing something?

Yes, merchants = vanity gear only as you suspect so you can ignore them like I have. Same for Haiku (headband vanity, monuments sword vanity, banners in the open world not required for taking a Mongol territory... horse saddle vanity, etc.).

Trappers, Bowyer, and the two who repair armor/weapons are the only ones you care about. Mostly Trappers because the others you will not interact with as much since there are only two weapons and the dagger upgrades super fast while the sword is quite spaced out in upgrades. Same for Bowyer. Armor is... a bit more bizarre but you will usually just stick to one armor probably.

Trappers, however, you will visit frequently because it can upgrade every single ghost weapon option and bow ammunition type of which there are quite a few so don't skimp collecting those pelts even if you think you've probably got the upgrades. So far I know of arrow / heavy arrow / explosive arrow / fire arrow / and all ghost weapons and perhaps there will be more.

Note that you can trade stuff you don't need for upgrading to trappers.
