So how does parry actually work?
So far it seems like you can both press the parry button and hold the parry button but it doesn't always work either and I can't really find any consistency in it.

Pressing the parry button seems to be the only way to do the perfect parry, which makes sense but sometimes I'll parry it normally, sometimes I wont even parry at all even with the same timing.

The same happens when I hold parry, sometimes I'll parry the attack and sometimes that same attack will damage me, and no its not the red attacks you cannot parry I'm talking about.

Do you have to 'aim' the parry like how you aim the 'holding' heavy attack?

I'm really confused as I can't see the rule in parrying, anyone know the ins and outs of this?

Just to give you a proper answer to what you've been wondering, it's the same as standoff bug where sometimes parry/dodge won't react. If you look at Jin closely there is a "position/animation" he does when you hold parry button and sometimes he just doesn't do it which results in you getting hit. It's just that keybinds are sometimes unresponsive which is a bit of a pain.

Ah well that would explain why it sometimes doesn't work.

Yeah, I was in a same boat as you, when I did parry without holding it (I never hold it after act 1 as I got better) and I was 100% sure my timings are the same as always, so I watched Jin rather then enemies and saw that sometimes he just stands there without doing anything because the parry is unresponsive.

As someone else mentioned, make sure to use the major charm that makes it easier to parry attacks. I'm able to parry all the time and often perfect parry
