So how does parry actually work?
So far it seems like you can both press the parry button and hold the parry button but it doesn't always work either and I can't really find any consistency in it.

Pressing the parry button seems to be the only way to do the perfect parry, which makes sense but sometimes I'll parry it normally, sometimes I wont even parry at all even with the same timing.

The same happens when I hold parry, sometimes I'll parry the attack and sometimes that same attack will damage me, and no its not the red attacks you cannot parry I'm talking about.

Do you have to 'aim' the parry like how you aim the 'holding' heavy attack?

I'm really confused as I can't see the rule in parrying, anyone know the ins and outs of this?

Simply just tap the parry button at the right moment. It's a pretty tight window (if you mean perfect parry.) There isn't much else to it. You're probably just hitting it tiny bit too early. My problem is the perfect dodge/evade.

Honestly I only parry if I really need resolve. Dodging is where its at.

It's not actually the perfect parry, I know that is real tight and I know I'm not good enough to do it all the time currently.

No my problem is that even with the same timing sometimes my parry doesn't work, I know this as I spent around an hour just doing the same boss (Heavenly Strike guy) and using him to practice getting used to my parry/dodge keybinds.

I've done the same with random mongol warriors too, just parry/dodge with them and still sometimes it feels like they just ignore my parry anyways.

In Accessibility options you can turn on "Enhanced Combat Cues" which increases the visual aids for dodging and parrying.

Doesn't that force easy? It's not that I think the game is that hard, even on Hard, so I wouldn't really like to play lower. I just feel like sometimes my parry doesn't work which annoys me.

can hold parry for every attack until you see a blue or red flash, gotta dodge red but if its blue you gotta time a click.

No. Well I tried it - it makes the dodge one really easy to spot. But you're not really losing anything. If you want to get better with it off just go practice I guess.

Wait, blue? That is only a skill you get to be able to parry stuff that wasn't parryable no?

Weird because I'm pretty sure one of those dual wielders jump attack which doesn't glow blue sometimes hit through a hold parry.

Yes I was considering practicing more, I made the post because I could swear that sometimes a normal attack just ignores my parry, even the holding one so I thought I might be missing something.

This YT'er breaks down how to correctly parry for those new to the game. He has another video where he showcases more examples for various styles and attacks.

It just takes practice to get the timing down, spear attacks have been the most difficult to time correctly.

They (attackers with spears) have an audio cue that plays, which lets you know when to parry (just in case you need more than movement hints).
Try listening for it - it's on every attack that flashes blue. It's real easy to spot, once you start hearing it for the first time.

There's also a charm call Mizi-no-Kami which makes getting parries easier. I never leave home without it.
