Fallout 4: Can't move mouse more than 90 degrees either way
As the title says, the mouse gets blocked after a certain point, so I can only rotate the camera 90 degrees left or right. I already made the tweaks/ini edits suggested here: https://www.protondb.com/app/377160
and followed the instructions in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HrHM3gQkDE
The game runs, the audio works, and camera rotation is not choppy, just blocked. I've put bBackgroundMouse=1 in every ini i could find to no avail. So, does anyone know how I can fix this? The game is pretty much unplayable if I can't turn around. Here are some specs if they matter:

OS: Manjaro Linux x86_64
Kernel: 4.19.32-1-MANJARO
CPU: Intel i5-6600K @ 3.9GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
RAM: 16GiB

Do you have a controller plugged in?

I've had this happen in some other games, and it stopped once I unplugged my controller.

Nope.

From what I read, you're supposed to add this text to your Fallout4Custom.ini file:
[Controls] bBackgroundMouse=1

I don't think it will help to add it to "every ini file", and I think you need the whole thing, not just the "bBackgroundMouse=1" part.

Also, make sure you're using latest version of Proton (4.2-2 at the moment).

Add your comment here, if it still doesn't work:

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/308

I guess I should've been more explicit in the OP; I put "bBackgroundMouse=1" in the "Controls" section for every ini in both ".../pfx/drive_c/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Fallout4/" and "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Fallout 4/". Thus, my Fallout4Custom.ini does look like that, as does pfx/.../Fallout4.ini and steamapps/common/.../Fallout4Default.ini (along with the other stuff in their controls sections that were already there).
Also, I am indeed using Proton 4.2-2. I'll go leave a comment in that issue.

Also, I didn't think adding it to every file would do anything either, but after it didn't work at first I figured it was worth a shot.

Okay, I was able to get it to work by doing the following:
  1. Switch to Proton 3.7-8 Beta and run the game once.
  2. Switch back to Proton4.2-2. (these two steps reset the game prefix, probably)
  3. Put "bBackgroundMouse=1" under [Controls] in just ...pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Fallout4/Fallout4.ini.
  4. Enter in terminal (in one line):
    WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX='/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/377160/pfx' winetricks xact
  5. Get faudio-19.01.tar.xz from here[github.com].
  6. Extract it, add everything from the x64 folder to /home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/377160/pfx/drive_c/windows/system32/.
  7. Enter in terminal (in one line):
    WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX='/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/377160/pfx' winecfg
  8. In Libraries tab: add overrides for xaudio2_6 and xaudio2_7, set both to native only. Apply.
  9. In Graphics tab, select:
    • Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows
    • Emulate a virtual desktop
    make sure to set the desktop size to your primary monitor's native resolution. Apply. Click Ok.
  10. The game will only work in the left-most monitor, so alter your display settings so your primary monitor is the furthest to the left.
After all that you should be able to pitch the camera freely, it won't skip around wildly, and you'll have fully working audio.

Thank you forn! After trying multiple tips and guides online, this is the only method that actually works for me.

For me none of the workarounds fixed the problem completely but simply pressing right mouse button fixes it, at least until loading new area or some cutscenes, then I have to press it again. Not great, not terrible.
