Feature Request: Use Libnotify for Desktop Notifications/Toasts
Would be nice if the Steam client used most Linux desktop environments' native way of handling pop-up notifications. Currently in XFCE the Steam popups are covering up part of my primary taskbar/panel on the bottom right, while the rest of my normal notifications from Firefox, Pidgin, etc show up in the top right of the screen and don't cover up anything.

I realize the Steam overlay currently uses the same notifications so it could create a disconnect, the Libnotify powered notifications could end up looking different from the ingame ones.

But it's an idea to consider at least.

I know that Mac OS X has it's own native notification system now, does anyone know if the Mac version of Steam currently uses that or does it use custom notifications/popups?

I've suggested this before. I agree with you. Libnotify would be a more efficient way of handling notifications, and it is also *much more* customizable on the user's end. Or at least let the user move the Steam notifications position themselves (I think on Mac it defaults to top right or something?)

Currently, the Steam notifications cover part of my Cairo-Dock. When I have many windows open, it acually covers icons, which is disruptive.

I think the Mac version of Steam (from videos, I recall) still use Steam's custom notifications, and not the native one.

I'm in for this as well. Steam's current notifications look terribly odd.

At least, in Desktop mode (that is, if no game is currently running in fullscreen).

There’s a feature request for this here, fyi https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/46
Bumping to show support. It's really irritating to have those toaster popups blocking my taskbar and Windows 10 has its own native toaster popups that some users may prefer to use. At the very least, I'd like Steam's popup to pop up without covering up my taskbar.
I agree. Steam should have an option to allow native notifications (if the user wants that). All OSes have their own standards for notifications. Mac and Linux have had them for a looong time, but more recently Windows also joined with their own notification system, introduced in Windows 10.

This option should only be available on systems that support it, so if you are on Windows 8 or older, you shouldn't have this option... and also if you are on Linux and you don't have a notification system, but that's very rare and it usually only happens if you uninstall it (but who does that, really?)
