Do I need to install Protontricks from within Steam for Linux? Manually install into my PC aside from Steam?
I see many people saying I need PROTONTRICKS, but, I have no idea where I need to go to get it installed.
Proton Experimental, and older / other versions of Proton auto install when I switch versions.
So, using just Proton, it looks like some things are not working, and often I need to either:
1. Manually add Protontricks
2. Manually add Proton GE
3. Manually add both
Both are not available from Steam, yet, Steam Play / Proton need them, to work right, for many games I am seeing, lately.
Just wondering, ..
Do you know why they are not offered on Steam, directly?
ProtonDB is the main site for what games work, and how to get them to work on Steam for Linux, right?
Is there not a Steam direct area for that? Maybe for Steam Deck only, and not Steam for Linux?
I have noticed that some versions of Linux have some software in the main Repo, but, sometimes 1 part is not fully updated, or, the whole thing is an older version. This causes drama / chaos, b/c it is supposed to be the right way to add / install on Linux, but, for example, if you get Steam for Linux in your local distro Repo, it might be an older version, (happen to me on last distro), of which then needs to update, and sometimes does not do so, completely, and/or , properly.
I fixed that by going straight to Steams website, and getting the latest version of Steam for Linux.
Issue is, now, it seems like I need to MANUALLY install at least 2 other software packages, being Protontricks, and 1 of the ProtonGE versions, to get some games to work on Steam for Linux, while also using Proton Experimental / Proton 8 / 7 / 6.
I just want to make sure I am doing all this the right way.
This might be useful.
