In windows I have not bad fps boost with 3dnow.
And it's strange, tf2 loads CPU to 50-60% in 3 threads and GPU to 30-50% - got lowest fps, bottleneck - !?
ut2k4 loads CPU to 25% cuz not multithreaded and GPU to 30% - got highest fps, bottleneck - 1 thread
So now better alternative to run source engine games in linux it's wine, it's work more faster than native version D:
You're comparing 10 years old, opengl 2.0, single threaded game to 3 years old (there was major graphics overhaul in 2010) opengl 3.x, multithreaded game. What's wrong with that picture? :)
It's AMD drivers fault only, ask anyone who have Nvidia card.
For example with my old GTS250 I got 70-300 fps at 28-32 players servers (with very rarely droping below 70 in huge spam at big maps - like Upward). Max settings with HDR and ragdolls/gibs off.
As for 3dnow I wondering how did you tested it? Just average fps measured "by eyes" or some benchmarks (prerecorded demo etc)?
I ran gl 3.x benchmark - same fps as in windows. I ran gl 2.x games - same fps as in windows. I ran tf2 under wine - better fps than native version.
I'ts not driver fault, it's vavle fault. Everything works fine, but not source engine games.
Since when, hardware company develops their driver to gamedevs needs, but not vice? :O
"By eyes", but it is enough.
What other, native opengl 3.x games have you tested at same machine under Win and Linux?
Funny that Nvidia and Intel cards have same performance under Linux as under Windows (check Phoronix tests which are a little more thorough then your "By eyes" methods :) ).
Optimizations occur on both sides (at least for most mainstream games), but if hardware manufacturer doesn't care much about it, it's not devs fault. Again check Phoronix tests for various games using Nvidia, Intel and AMD cards or just take a look at this forums where 98% of performance problems happen for AMD users.
I'm not sure what else there is to add, except gaming under Linux - only with Nvidia.
Sorry man but that is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I was able to play Far Cry 3 at high with a mere Radeon HD 7770 where a "better" GTX 560 was unable. Actually, with my Radeon R9 270X I am kicking any GTX 660.
