Steam won't open with AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta 8 Drivers

I installed the driver because everything else was giving very choppy performance and their latest press release[support.amd.com] reported better performance in L4D2 on Linux.

Everything seems to start just fine, but then I get this

 Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar"
/home/andershokinson/Steam/steam.sh: line 255:  4732 Segmentation fault      (core dumped) $DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$PLATFORM/$STEAMEXE" "$@" 

Is there anyone with a similar issue or has anyone found a better solution to my problem? I am using ATI Radeon HD 5670

A lot of people here are failing to open steam at all with the beta8 catalyst drivers, mostly it seems 64 bit linux.

There is a workaround to start steam, however steam remains unstable and TF2 and SS3 will not start.
You can work around this error by first ensuring you have libgl1-mesa-glx installed:

sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx

This will give you a clean libGL.so.1 file. To force Steam to use this file instead of the one that ships with the AMD drivers, you can just create a link:

ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 ~/Steam/ubuntu12_32/

That's no workaround that's crap. You would use software rendering that way.

Just passing on a workaround that worked for me to get into steam, does explain why games won't load with it, still just trying to help

I couldn't wait. TF2 now runs very very nicely with the beta driver suggested by Kano here:

I was unable to run run TF2 until I installed the beta driver and wow what an improvement that driver is in Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with ATI Radeon HD 5450

I installed it the 28 oct, so I'm quiet sure they are the initial.
I got crash every 5-40 min.
The line is always the 255, but the number change (now I got a 5858 segmentation fault)
