Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Steam OS AAA titles
I was thinking about this today that steam is the gamestop of the web. I know thats a horriable thing to say. I just mean they wil be able to force the devlopers to port games that have no reason not being on linux to linux. Im not into COD games but with the kind of money they have there is no reason not to put them on linux. I just hope that they can get JRPG's to the pc, sadly its the only reason to buy a system. Maby squarenix will hear my plea and port ff14 and all the rest of the games to linux.

Well, they did say this on the first day:

"Watch for announcements in the coming weeks about all the AAA titles coming natively to SteamOS in 2014."

I imagine they have at least a few in mind. I hope at least one of their own, since I would personally love HL3 or L4D3. But if you're not into that sort of thing, there's still a chance another sort will be announced.... of course FF14 in particular is rather unlikely :p

The number of people who play COD who use linux is very small. The thing is people don't care about the OS, they just care about playing their games. If you some how provide significant advantages to the user then they will switch platforms. Otherwise they see no need. With the the new steambox controller with buttons on the bottom, it will be great for COD and other shooters because you can keep your thumbs on the pads while having access to many buttons at the same time. If steambox can somehow allow Mantle so developers can access lower level hardware api, it will provide massive results to the user experience.

I am with you i dont care whats on the distro it will most likely get abused like android stealing code and profiting of the hard work of the community. If they were smart thay would take a step back and say humm liux people are the people who hack all the things and get it for free in the end so insted of makeing us emulate/jailbrake what ever just feed us what we want! propritay games on 1 system is a dumb buissness model that kinda ended back in snes/sega days with mortal combat but somehow its made its way back into the mix :(

If you've been around for more than 10 years, most Japanese devs have always been pissed at sony's and co. SDKs, simply put programming for consoles is a crap mess. Thats why valve is so confident they can offer the best, most interesting platform for programmers, which in the end means yes, they'll most likely port everything to SteamConsole, once its released.

If you want to see AAA titles on Linux the best thing you can do is ASK the developer/publisher to port their games. The more people that ask the more likely that they will think about porting. Don't forget its not just you asking its Gaben too.

Ask on twitter, ask in comments, ask on forums, ask in discussions ask via email. When enough customers ask for the same thing it tends to happen.

TLDR; ASK!

What works even more than asking is saying "It's a shame your game isn't on Linux. I would buy it if it was."
Can you supply evidence that it works? Or an example?

Ask on Reddit, put links to devs forums/twitters on Reddit. Reddit today has the power to change things around, use it :)
Come on, people. Linux users are mostly geeks with programming skills and everything. Why not create our own AAA titles and make them linux exclusive instead of begging EA or Activision? Something that should have happend years ago. I always wondered why linux people can't do more than openarena...
It's because the budget for an AAA game is in the area of tens of millions of dollars.

Then let's leave Americans out and there will be no dollars involved...
Great idea! Millions of euros are much easier to get.
I think programmers are less of a problem for possible free and open source Linux games. I think there's a lack of artists with interest in creating free Linux games (i.e. using open source game engines), especially single player campaigns require lots of creative content.
I think artists exist, just look at Deviantart and places like that. Programmers do exist as well. The only thing missing is someone to organize them, and all this for free or at least without guaranteed profit. There are too many shy/money hungry people on the internet.

One of the exceptions also shows this. Once the OpenMW project found a strong and confident leader, it's expanding at a speed no one would have thought. And it's a great thing, we need more like this.
Sadly talking about this on youtube with people who dont understand what linux realy is of how this is going to be is driving me nuts. I try explaining its like XBMC and kindle. in 500 charters are not enough to get people to understand.
