Steam for Linux

Linux Mint vs. Ubuntu
The masses who switched to Linux to use Steam and play Steam games are mostly using Ubuntu. Well, I just wanna say Linux Mint is far better. Why? Cinnamon is sexy, modern and intuitive and green + silver = win. I like Unity, but not as much as Cinnamon. I'm also really glad Linux Mint is based off of Ubuntu. It brings some great benefits that some other distros don't have. I'm looking at you, Arch Linux!

Bring on the flames.

cinnamon does not disable composite and games runs slower, even unity can run games at full speed in fullscreen mode, if you want to use linux mint why not use kde or mate ?
"Linux Mint is far better.", what a critically supported statement you have there...

I am using Mint 15 Cinnamon, but I'm probably going to switch to Ubuntu when I get the chance, I have experienced too many issues with Mint.

Plus, in these times of imminent Linux breakthrough I feel safer being closer to the preferred source of Linux support which is Ubuntu.

Finally, Linux users don't have flame wars, we didn't get our systems from our dad for our 12th birthday.

Because I don't like KDE or MATE near as much as Cinnamon integrated with Linux Mint. I find it far more aesthetically pleasing. Also, if I wanted to use KDE I'd probably use Kubuntu, not Linux Mint. As for the slower speed, that isn't the case for everyone. Check out the Phoronix tests. Also, Cinnamon 2.0 is coming in Linux Mint 16, so the future is looking bright imo.

Linux users don't have flame wars? What? Lol Idk where you've been, but not on the internet apparently. Arch Linux says hi. The Steam forums are not representative of the entire Linux community.

And yes, I'll admit it, the point of this thread is to get people arguing about Linux Mint vs Ubuntu. I'm bored.

What sort of issues are you having out of curosity? I'm currently on Linux Mint 14 MATE and it's been working well
Agreed. Ubuntu upgrading to Nautilus 3.6 was the final straw for me. Linux Mint was my distro of choice back before Ubuntu started shipping with Unity. It's good to be back.

Hmm... you sure about that? I recently switched from Ubuntu 12.10 to Linux Mint 15, and I've seen nothing but performance increases, both in game and performing other tasks.

Several forums and websites. It's probably too far fetched to say there aren't any at all, but I have noticed the average Linux user to be far more mature and intelligent than others.

At their cores, Mint and Ubuntu are the same, Mint is just a repackaging. It means mostly visual and functional alterations between the two which basically comes down to preference in my opinion.
I'm currently messing around with Mint 15 Cinnamon, and Kubuntu 13.04.
I've been using Ubuntu 12.04, and 12.10, tried out Xubuntu 12.10.
So far Mint 15 Cinnamon and Kubuntu 13.04 has by far been the best experiences, but I plan on trying Fedora, Arch KDE, Debian 7.1, and OpenSUSE 12.3.
I've had it with Unity, I don't like the layout, the functionality, and the amount of lockups (compared to KDE and Cinnamon). The biggest advantage I see in Ubuntu, is the extensive softwarecenter, but you can install that on all ubuntu (all debian?) derivatives.

If the recent news from Nvidia means binary Wayland support anytime soon, I'll be using something with Wayland support. Quite possibly KDE 4.11+.

Cinnamin is fine, mint is fine. Recently I broke Unity with some experimental packages (completely unusable and tough to track down). So in order to get things running I installed several DE to try them out Cinamon, Gnome Shell, XFCE... While all of them worked and were unique in thier own way, I found all of them harder to do my day to day tasks in. I missed the HUD and Dash so very much. Gnome Shell had a search function I liked but it felt more restrictive and less polished. Cinnamon felt like 2005 all over agian, functional, but I am not that nostalgic.

I fixed the offending ppa and got unity back, it was such a sense of relief. I don't know what I would do without it for long periods of time.

From my own two cents, here is my post;

I use five different distros for Steam gaming and work, and Linux Mint is by far the best to work/game with. I was able to easily install my GPU drivers in Linux Mint when all I got were errors/problems in Ubuntu 12.04.

So personally, I see better performance in my Mint than I do in the others. However, I didn't see much of a difference when I finally got everything working in Ubuntu 12.04.2 alongside Mint.

PS: Note that I don't hate mint nor like Ubuntu!

No, you must say "Mint is better in MY little opinion", because it too has flaws, like the Software Manager not reporting a install (Mint 13 and 15), custom login screens crashing, some youtube videos not working because of the Flash version, etc etc.

Cinnamon is just a DE (and a very slow one, comparing it to KDE for ex), if you don't like Unity you can install other DE's too. They're pretty much the same system, same packages, same repositories. Saying Mint is better is the same as saying "I like the tiny 0.01% of the changes made in Ubuntu".

On the performance side, I THINK Mint is a bit faster then Ubuntu on extracting compressed files and only on this subject, extracting Left 4 Dead 2's folder (almost 80k items) takes about 10 minutes in Mint, and on Ubuntu it takes about 12.

Arch is just a minimalist distro where you must do everything yourself. It's good for learning but awful if you work installing distros for people, who would take the effort and time to install Arch on companies, for example? Just install openSUSE and disable things you don't want (on the install process you can do it) or even just Ubuntu, after all not much changes in the way the OS operates, in the way the client will work.

i use Linux Mint Mate its a lot faster then Base Ubuntu

I use Xubuntu and it's much better than the default Unity/MATE/Cinnamon Desktop Environments. XFCE ftw.
Ive been running steam on LMDE 64 with Mate for a bit now. I had ubuntu for a while, but I got a new computer and wanted to see how LMDE would fair. With Mate, LMDE is extremely responsive. I have no issues. Ubuntu felt a bit slower, but it still performed. Honestly, I am going to stick with LMDE, but I have nothing against Ubuntu.
