Steam for Linux

Steam on Wine vs Native Client
Just curious on which is "better".

I'm really itching to switch over to Linux for good, but the catalog is still a little weak for my liking. Do games with native Linux ports tend to work well when run on Wine? For example, is there a huge difference between running TF2 natively through Steam and running TF2 through Steam through Wine?

That way I can play Linux games, and I can play any Windows-only games that actually work, through only one Steam client.

On topic: WINE is emulation. The reason why it's not called an emulator is because it might give Windows the impression that some form of copyright is being infringed upon.
And what do you base this on? That is, you know, more reliable then those behind the development of the project?

IIRC the reason Wine isn't an emulator is because it doesn't deal with hardware emulation - it is merely an API layer.

Common sense. WINE is silly and is preventing software from being natively ported to Linux. It's disappointing.

So in other words... you don't actually know, and you're just saying stuff because you're upset?

Well to be fair, didn't Carmack actually say something like that?

http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/02/06/john-carmack-claims-emulation-is-the-key-to-linux-support-questions-native-ports/

Not really, I guess. He just said that devs should focus their efforts on WINE and not that WINE was actually holding anything back on Linux.
Many 'native ports' use a DirectX to OpenGL wrapper...like WINE.

For example DOTA 2 under wine runs perfectly well. There is no noticeable difference to Window$ version.
maybe for a nvidia user

i hate wine. its like running a Windows Emulator... ... .. . . . . . wait a second?!?! enough fun, think of it this way when you run an emulator for a game from an old console on your pc... they typically suck by comparison to running it on the console itself... so take it from there.

I dunno about that anymore.....Have you seen Wii/GC games on Dolphin? Skyward Sword looks mighty fine, in 1080p.

No, not like Wine, Valves DX to OGL layer was made with gaming in mind, and it shows.
It shows what exactly? That Valve can do more for themselves with privileged access to information than the WINE team do for everyone without?
Regardless, stop referring to them as native ports. It's WINE's translation layer vs. Valve's.

Oh yeah, because, Valve has kept everything it knows about porting to Linux a secret.....
Slideshows are cheap. Show me the code.

you realize valves games are open gl... not DX to open gl...
WINE is silly
Ok
and is preventing software from being natively ported to Linux.
No. It's the 1.5% market share of Linux that prevents games from being ported to Linux.

Edit: Well, more like the 97% market share of Windows for gaming that prevents games from being ported to Linux. I'm reminded now of someone who said "if you want Windows games, use Windows", even when they can be played on Linux through WINE, thus making the Windows gaming market share bigger.
It's disappointing.
Stop trying to change other people and work on the environment instead. People aren't using Linux for legitimate reasons, it's much more productive to try to eliminate those reasons than to be disappointed.
