Steam for Linux

How to show games icons?
When I install a game on my Ubuntu 13.04 64bit, I always get the standard steam icon instead of the icon of the game I have installed? Why?

Is this a bug? Is there any way to fix it? (Except manually download an icon for each game installed)

Thank you for your time

The desktop icon defaults to the Steam icon if there is no Linux desktop icon specified in the configuration for Steam to use, this shouldn't be the case for every game though. You can use http://steamdb.info/linux/ to find out if the game has an icon specified or not, you'll see "(No Linux Icon)" under the 'Linux Status' column if it doesn't have one.

why do you need game icons, should all be in your game libary
Thank you for your answes.
What you are saying is not correct. According to the list you provided me I should be able to see the icons..but this is not the case. Is there any option?
I have the same problem on 2 different machines.....
I need game icons because I like to have different icons, so if possible i'd like to have them..

Thanks

If you're just wanting to set custom icons then you can just create/edit the .desktop files to use your custom icons.

I had this while Steam was on Beta, Counter-Strike 1.6 and Source had default Steam icons but this got fixed after a Steam update.

Open and closed beta [edit]
Developers release either a closed beta or an open beta; closed beta versions are released to a restricted group of individuals for a user test by invitation, while open beta testers are from a larger group, or anyone interested. The testers report any bugs that they find, and sometimes suggest additional features they think should be available in the final version. Examples of a major public beta test are:
In September 2000 a boxed version of Apple's Mac OS X Public Beta operating system was released.[3]
Microsoft's release of community technology previews (CTPs) for "Longhorn" in January 2005.[4]
Open betas serve the dual purpose of demonstrating a product to potential consumers, and testing among an extremely wide user base likely to bring to light obscure errors that a much smaller testing team might not find.

I know it was a joke, that's why I pasted a Wikipedia text and didn't bother to explain :)
mmmm

Is it possible to have a serious answer please?
I am simply trying to visualize correctly the icons. I have everywhere the steam icon instead of the game icons. This is wrong.

I'll be very glad if someone would please help me with that.
Thank you very much.

@OP: What games are you creating the icons on the desktop? Is your system up-to-date? IS Steam updated?
All my games have the steam standard icon (Bastion, Shank2, Legend of Grimlock, Trine, Trine 2, etc...)
I am using Ubuntu 13.04 64bit fully updated and Steam with beta enabled fully updated.

Seems like this issue affects more people.
You could try https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/989 or googling more deep into your problem.
I see it's a bug/issue of steam.
Thank you for your support.

It's quite an easy fix really. You just have to set the icons correctly in your applications' .desktop file. I've written a more detailed blog post about it with screenshots[bendavis.me] but the cut down version is:

  1. Save an icon for the game you want an icon for. I'd recommend saving it in /home/yourusername/.local/share/icons.
  2. Edit your games .desktop file (which is found in /home/yourusername/.local/share/applications) by either using a text editor or right click the file and edit it's icon.
  3. Logout and login and hey presto - custom icons where before there was none!

I hope that's helpful.

Ubuntu 13.04 has not been supported since the beginning of 2014 (well over a year ago) http://www.ubuntu.com/info/release-end-of-life You might want to upgrade to 14.04 which has long term support. But if you upgrade (instead of installing fresh) make sure that you ppa-purge any added ppa's (3rd party repositories) "before" upgrading to 14.04.

Steam games that produce their own launchers in Dash (if not on your Desktop) are in ~/.local/share/applications/

Only some games have unique icons. Even common games like "Garry's Mod" and "Left 4 Dead 2" only have the default Steam icon. So if you want your own icon for games without unique icons you would need to create them. I have used 32x32 pixel png files for other desktop launchers (created with gimp).

I think it may help ytou to know that your blog blocks comments because it requires captcha yet there is no captcha image nor type box.

your technique is something I've tried which has ruined my icon sheme.

now icons that actually worked on steam no longer show up and instead mimick whatever the new icon is set as : blank, steam or whatever other icon I set it to.

apparently steam's icon system (Icon=steam_icon_20920) is extremely fragile and freaks out if ever messed with.
