3D Acceleration, Virtual Box and Steam
I am having problems with steam and 3d acceleration. When turned on in virtualbox, when I try to run steam it pops up with a fatal error saying that it does not run in virtualbox with 3d acceleration enabled. However, when I don't enable 3d acceleration, none of the GUI loads and when trying to launch steam through the terminal, in a spew of error messages it says: OpenGL Warning: Failed to connect to host. Make sure 3D acceleration is enabled for this VM.

Anyone have any ideas? It tells me to both have and not have 3D acceleration

You can't do anything with 3D Acceleration in a VM anyway. It's just a crappy virutal driver and doesn't support OpenGL 3.0 which is required by Source Engine games they won't even start.

With a cross platform program, i still wonder why you need steam running in a virtual box...
I'm having exactly the same problem. Fresh install of VirtualBox and Ubuntu. I would like to be able to test Ubuntu and Steam without sacrificing a physical machine.
I must admit that getting Ubuntu Desktop v12.04 LTS 32-bit to work in graphics mode in VirtualBox also took some doing...

Yea well... You guys are doing it wrong. Just install Ubuntu with WUBI, get Tux, boot back to Windows and remove it just like any other app. But dont expect performance, WUBI is not true Ubuntu experience.
