1. yes, but you have to repartition the drive, meaning allocate less space to your windows partition so there's room to have a linux partition.
2. there should be nvidia driver packages in mint, but you can also get them from the website. former is easier though.
3. yes, but you need to install 32 bit compatibility libraries. there are plenty of guides on that, google something like "steam architecture i386". the easier way is to install 32 bit ubuntu.
hope that helps
2. What I did was: System tools > System settings > Software sources > Additional drivers > Select the "Using NVIDIA binary Xorg driver...nvidia-current..."
The system will update it for you this way, unlike if you installed them from the site.
3. Steam will work on 64bit; I am using it on 64bit Mint right now.
Edit:Do i have to make the new partition on Windows or can i do it through the installer(without it deleting my stuff)?
Do it through the installer. If it's Gparted it's dead easy. It won't hurt your windows install, just make sure you identify the right disk :)
You can even mount your windows drive within Linux and copy files to and from it. Surprisingly handy.
Hi Scrubtrash,
First, update, update, update. Ensure your system is patched and current before doing anything.
You absolutely need the nvidia drivers. Get them through Synaptic. The nvidia-experimental-310 is in use everywhere. If your video card is brand-spanking-new, you might need a more recent nvidia-driver version. Still, get them through Synaptic. That's "easy mode" Also, reboot after you install those drivers.
Second, go to store.steampowered.com in your web browser. Click on the green "install steam" icon and Mint will do the rest. Just follow the prompts. The software-installer will pickup any other packages you need to install Steam.
Oh, and yes, Steam works on 64bit distros. The client might not be 64bit but it absolutely works on 64bit distros.
Keep us updated on your progress!
Visuals please. How about a screenshot?
Steam running on Mint yet? TF2 goodness?
I once had something happen when the screen became black execpt for a white rectangle in the corner with stuff about playlists and ''GPU locking up''...
Two screens shouldn't be a problem...but starting with one might make troubleshooting easier.
Where is the Mint install freezing?
Can't speak about which version to install. That's a user choice.
So, you boot from the Linux Mint DVD, end up in a desktop where you double-click on "install Linux Mint". What happens next? Does the installer run? Are you prompted for setup info (locale, user, password, partitioning, etc.)? Does the installer get past that point and start installing packages?
Details, please.
