It's a really good idea, not only for linux, but for windows and mac as well.

Great idea, always feel a bit worried when I try overlays tools such as video recording tools when games have anti-cheat that could possibly have false positives.

Yeah! Integrate screen capture tool into Steam overlay!

Only if we could flick it off with, for example, shift+F11

Cedega (GametreeLinux) had an FPS counter built into its optional overlay. It worked great. This is a good idea.

You should make a feature request at general Steam forums too imo :)

Wine+osd_cat can mimic FRAPS. But only for wined software.

When you bring up the overlay, most games pause, and usually stop making most calculations. So you'd have a way to measure the fps of some irrelevant game menus. Completely useless.

If they happened to rewrite the overlay completely to have an always-on, mostly transparent layer, it could work. But how often does Valve rewrite something from scratch, especially for such a small feature? Something like never.

It would be more productive to ask Beepa to create a linux version of Fraps. Or even better, linux is open source, the community could make a similar application, if they really wanted to.
