i clicked install the tf2 beta and it said download 14.something GB disk space 4. something
The game most likely actually is 12 or so GB in size in this case.
Tried re-downloading and then verifying game cache?
Sometimes after download it appears as 14GB but you gotta either enter the game or verify cache to fix that. Works with me
TF2 shares some data files with other Source Engine games, perhaps you had some other games already installed (at Windows). TF2 takes around 17GB at my drive atm (it creates around 2GB of cache files aswell I think plus some downloaded maps etc). And if you consider amount of hats and other items in game, that's pretty reasonable amount of space :)

Yep. This makes sense, as the backup I have for TF2 (Linux Version) is about 7 GiB, and that's compressed.
