Ubuntu 12.10 with ATI HD 5770

Hello there people! Just thought i would share my experience so far,
I am running Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with Gnome interface ( if that matters at all! )

I have been trying TF2 with various different graphics drivers. I have tried the proprietary drivers from the Software sources. I have tried the original X.org drivers from the sources and the AMD ones from the site.

The ones from the site would not work on my machine at all. I could not get them to run. It would only run my Fall-back session of gnome, so no 3d visuals and crap resolution.

The Original X.org ones from the software sources would play the game, but only at like 5 or lower FPS.

Any of the proprietary ones would work, but steam would crash on loading.

I then tried the ones suggested in this post.

These work well, i am using these ones and getting about.. 20-30 FPS with most settings on high.

I am getting quite a big bug as well. If i minimize out, or switch desktop screens. Going back will cause the system display to hang, but everything ells still runs in the background. I can shoot, and hear the sounds. It eventually went back to the game screen, but sometimes i had to force shut the machine down.

Is there any way i could get the ones from AMD working OK? Am I missing something here?
I assume that most people would be wanting to run the AMD ones.

Anyhow, enough of my rambling. Just my experiences!

Are the best ones for you to use. I get about 200-300 FPS in TF2 using them with the exception that AA and HDR need to be turned off (otherwise FPS sits around 30).

I cant even get them drivers to install, i keep getting:

"Check if system has the tools required for installation.
fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/3.7.0-4-generic/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system.
One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system. Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver.
Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools.
Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system unstable. Not recommended."

Which i have done, and i have checked. But the .run still does not want to install. Any thoughts?

My experience has been mainly with using my Linux Mint 13 box with a AMD HD5670.
TF2 - stock proprietary driver (fails to load the game), open source driver works but is unplayable (slow)
Serious Sam 3 - stock proprietary driver (loads the game but there are lots of graphics glitches), open source drivers work but you need to turn down settings to get it to run smoothly
Killing Floor - Works with both proprietary and open drivers but tends to have more crashing problems with the proprietary drivers
Space Pirates and Zombies - works with both but tends to crash with the proprietary drivers

At least for me the open drivers seem to be working out a little better in terms of stability.

I'm also running a 5770 (Ubuntu 12.04, 32bit, AMD 12.11 driver).

I'll put in my 2 cents as soon as TF2 has downloaded.

Here's my 2 cents: After launching TF2 and joining a server I got about 15-16 fps. :(

I believe the driver may be the culprit. However others have mentioned they're getting 100fps or greater.

Yeah, I think AMD 5000 series + Source Engine in linux is worthless right now.

Awfulness everywhere on my 5870. A lot of the people who seem to be having luck with AMD drivers are using the 6000 series.
