Off Topic: @Mikolaj, What's XFCE like performance wise? :-)
I've opened Steam in both Unity and Cinnamon and don't have a tray icon in either one of them. Running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit.
I'm on KDE Plasma 4 and if I use the Icons-Only Task Manager I can treat it like a System Tray icon (grants access to quick jump menus, etc). Unfortunately recent titles don't appear in the menu and you have to keep an open window minimised to use it. It's a work around if anything.
12.04 64 bit here, no tray icon or indicator for me either (and Unitys tray whitelist is for "all").
No tray icon here too (Gentoo/amd64, KDE 4.9.3). Look guys, someone must have them all. Let's go find him and get our tray icons back!!!
No tray icon for me (12.04, x64, gnome-shell). There is one when I run win32 steam through wine though.
no tray icon in xubuntu (xfce) - this is very annoying!
Ubuntu Unity 12.04 64bit, no tray icon. Desura has one. The people who claim to have one, could you post screenshots somewhere? Maybe in the ubuntu forums?
Looks like they are going to add systray icon via the libappindicator library, which is not yet available for 64-bit Ubuntu (or rather, its 32-bit version isn't). See http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/1/882965239659234799/#c882966056687810731

EDIT: From yet another topic about this, it's already been requested at ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/libappindicator/+bug/1081938

no systray icon in debian or fedora here. doesn't matter the WM/DE

(also, no libappindicator library for Fedora)

C'mon!! Freedesktop.org has published a very mature and stable standard for distro agnostic systray app icons.. get with it Valve!

I know, I know.. it's a beta, ubuntu first.. just be careful not to get pigeonholed in Ubuntuisms

Cheers,

The fact that libappindicator is required for a rather important Steam feature, but isn't listed as a dependancy is at the very least, poor form. The fact that Valve isn't using Freedesktop.org's standards is ridiculous.

If you have no tray icon, make sure to install libappindicator (if you can).
