I don't fully understand the magic behind this, but it works....
Please note, the link in first post doesn't work, but you can find it easily with an internet search.

Thank you for mentionnning the broken link. This project use to be hosted on Google Code. But it seems like it's been discontinued and used(maybe forked?) by https://code.google.com/p/x360ce/.Anyway Greenbikerdude was mentionnning above "It should be mentioned that they want to include xbox gamepad support for wine 1.6 afaik".
I haven't been playing under wine lately(only native games) so I'm not sure if wine 1.6+ kept it's promises.
I beleive ubuntu is using wine 1.4 still. So for those who would like to try they could try to add a PPA like this
https://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu
or install playonlinux http://www.playonlinux.com/en/ (before installing read about it).
Hey Revernu,
We are talking about Wine(http://www.winehq.org/about/) + steam games. So it's not so much about Steam linux abilty to handle the Xbox360 than for Wine to recognize the gamepad.
Yahoo shows relevant results
As I mentioned in your own thread Revernus:

xboxdrv 360 emulation mode is still superior. BPM mappings are only honored by some games, which makes it super convenient, but completely useless if you're playing one of those games. Linux versions of Dead Island and Trine 2, to name a few I've had experience with.
EDIT:
@OP: Also, thanks for making this post. I bookmarked it. I definitely use Wine for a few Windows games, and I've ran into the xboxdrv enabled gamepad not working in Wine issue in the past.
Also that file seems to be getting hard to find. I'll post the link to where I found it. It's not a very good site and it tried taking me to a paid download, but there's a less obvious download button which worked right away.

Maybe I should upload the file myself so we have somewhere reliable to get it from.
It may be worth a shot with a new Wine version. (if you are, for example, using an old PlayOnLinux script to install a game, which pulls in a specific Wine version)
