Can't calibrate F710 controller in steam for linux?
Hey. I recently bought a logitech F710, based on reccomendations from this community and other sites, and it has worked flawlessly for platformers that only use the D-pad. It was instantly recognized by the default driver (using Ubuntu 12.10). However, the analog sticks have huge deadzones, which makes it very hard to play certain games.

I installed jstest-gtk to calibrate the controller, and it's showing me very tiny deadzones. In fact, when I play SuperTuxKart (a game not on steam), it correctly recognizes the deadzones as being very small, but all my games on steam for linux have big deadzones (tested Brutal legend, Trine 2 and Don't Starve). It seems the steam for linux games completely ignore the jstest-gtk configurations, even though they are supposed to apply to all apps. Even inverting the axes in jstest-gtk has no effect in Steam, while it works immediately in SuperTuxKart.

Has anyone run into this issue? Those deadzones make it very hard to play.

can't you set it up in big picture?

I can remap the controls in big picture mode, but I can't calibrate the controller. I want to reduce the size of the deadzones on the analog sticks, and I don't see any option to do that in big picture mode.

most games let you reset the dead zone ingame

I guess the games I picked don't have very good controller support then...

Still, I wonder why the steam games ignore my controller calibration. There must be some special way steam recognizes the controller that bypasses the configuration files I have. If anyone knows why this is happening, I'd really like to know.

EDIT: Bear in mind, I don't want to just reset the deadzone, as in center the sticks properly. I want to reduce the size of the deadzone. I don't have a game that offers that option.

Maybe the games you play only use the gamepad joysticks like simple switches or buttons (keyboard substitute) instead of proportional. If there are no gamepad adjustments in game, see if there are text configuration files.

The only steam game I have used my F710 for, other than TF2 from Big Picture to qualify for Steam OS hardware beta and some giggles, is Salvation Prophecy. But I only use the gamepad for space flight, not on the ground where I am used to keyboard/mouse. The joysticks work somewhat similar to proportional radio control flight, left stick throttle and rudder, right stick pitch and roll. Although, trigger levers are just used like switches in that game.

That game has gui keyboard and joystick configuration, but no adjustments for gamepad. For some reason the Dpad worked in menus, but not in flight, so I had to modify the gamepad config file for that to work. Then all controls worked fine.

im not sure if this will help but i use a ps2 joypad with my linux system and while the default driver does work fine with some games it completely fails on others.... so now (when necessary) I use the 'xboxdrv' driver to take my joypad and emulate a 360 joypad (using the '--mimic -xpad' switch for xboxdrv).

with that setup to properly remap the inputs from my joypad to 'xinput' style (i.e. same as 360 inputs) i am then able to use 'jstest-gtk' to calabirate the joypad and those calabirations are passed through steam to all my steam for linux games.

i have found that many of the games with controller support are only setup to take xinput, and now using 'xboxdrv' i have my controller working perfectly.

so... first suggestion to try to help your issue would be (and this is probably something you've already done - but just in case...) i beleive that on the F710 there is a switch on the actual controller to switch between 'xinput' ('X') and the other main style (direct input - 'D'). Is your joypad switched to 'X' mode? if not does changing it to this help you with getting your calabirations passed to the games?

if that dosn't help i would suggest possibly trying 'xboxdrv' (should be plenty of info on google about how to set it up to work with your controller) to see if using that driver will then let you calabirate properly with jstest-gtk and properly pass those calabirations to steam games.

best of luck :)

Yes, I will try xboxdrv. There must be some problem with xpad that prevents the calibrations from affecting steam games.
