4K Gaming Under Linux
Hi,

I have a 4k monitor with display port connection, but as yet have only been able to get it working under windows.

Has anyone been able to get the 'Intel HD Graphics 4600' working with display port under linux?

From my experience of 4k gaming is well worth the money, altough i've had to disable FXAA, and Complex Shadow. Sniper Rifle, anyone..........!

4K monitors are better supported in X.Org Server 1.16 or newer, older versions don't work very well. This means that you need to use a up to date distro, like Ubuntu 14.10, Fedora 21, openSUSE 13.2, etc. Besides that, from what I found, Intel doesn't fully support display port under Linux.

Don't forget that the desktop environment must have HiDPI support, and in some of them you have to manually enable it.

Take a look in the following links:

I cannot imagine gaming at 4K on HD 4600 which is very sluggish on a 1080p Linux laptop. Or is HD 4600 faster on a desktop or if that is all you have vs. using Intel part of combo Intel/Nvidia graphics? For example Team Fortress 2 is unplayable which appears to run much slower than the indicated 10 fps and audio repeats in short loops (maybe video does too and is why it does not appear to move). I forget fps using Nvidia GTX 765m on that laptop because it runs smoothly and is not an issue.

Maybe HD 4600 would be OK @ 4K for playing video, but for game graphics HD 4600 cannot even do all graphics benchmarks because it is missing capabilities to do some things.

Intel graphics is better supported in Windows. But in my experience @ 1080p, if you did get 4K working in Linux, it might not be fast enough to do any gaming at all.

4K gaming with an Intel HD Graphics 4600? That seems rough. Anyways, as previous answers have stated the newest Linux kernels have a really good 4K support for Intel Haswell chipsets.
