Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Can't install Steam. Says I'm missing 'libGL.so.1
Hey folks,

I have been introduced to Ubuntu Linux through Crouton for Chromebooks. Extremely new to Linux. Just downloaded it. Linux is so weird I don't get why I need a terminal just to open firefox. So out of my depth.

Anyways, I tried to install Steam but I kept on getting the same error as it tries to download an update. Say's I'm missing libGL.so.1. I looked online and some people said that entering the following solved the issue:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

However that didn't work since it said that "File already exists". What the hell do I do?

FYI: I own an Acer C720 i3 4GB incase that's needed to know.

If you're new to Linux, it will be hard to cope with Crouton on a Chromebook. If you can, you IMHO should install Linux on a "real" PC. You will not need to start Firefox from terminal with an ordinary Linux installation. I wonder if this should even be the case with Crouton.

You don't need the terminal to open Firefox. What version of Ubuntu did you install? I have never used Crouton so I really don't know how that works.

Are you using a 64bit OS? If that's the case you probably need to install the 32bit libraries since Steam doesn't have a 64bit client. They are necessary for most games too.

Here is a tutorial on that: https://support.humblebundle.com/hc/en-us/articles/202759400-Installing-32-bit-libs-on-a-64-bit-Linux-system

Good Luck!

I've got a C720 running Chrubuntu and I'd recommend ditching Crouton. There are enough problems using Chrubuntu (as opposed to normal Ubuntu), I shudder to think what running Crouton is like!

As mentioned Crouton is still ChromeOS under the hood so you're going to be using a ChromeOS kernel and drivers. I very much doubt that the 3D drivers in ChromeOS are up to much (why would a webbrowser need decent 3D drivers, I know webgl exists but it isn't really in use yet). With Chrubuntu you run a full kernel with updated drivers.

It isn't perfect, drivers need reinstalling after kernel updates, the internal microphone doesn't work and the touchpad isn't quite right. But being a much more standard install, by and large everything works the way it's supposed to.

Here's a short thread on installing Chrubuntu:
